Nation reels after assassination shock and Rotary talk set

In a country still grieving a brutal act on the president, citizens seek normalcy while pledging to prevent recurrence. Local Rotary Club, December 6, will host C. O. Crane on the Sanford Dam Canadian River Project, detailing water, flood control, and wildlife benefits for cities including Amarillo and Lubbock.

Film Presented To Kiwanis Club in Brownfield

W D Bud Cotham presided at the Brownfield Kiwanis Club meeting at the Westerner Monday evening. Willis Webber presented a film on Total Communications provided by General Telephone Company of the Southwest. Officers will be installed on December 9 at 7 30 p.m. in a special ladies night at the Westerner. Thirteen members were present.

Four youths charged in cafe burglary ring in Brownfield

Brownfield Police rounded up four youths Monday on charges tied to a string of cafe and grocery burglaries during November 15 and the prior Sunday. Names given include Joe Gutierrez 23 Joe Zapata Jr 17 Joe Deanda Jr 17 and Johnny Diaz 17. Others face theft and drunkenness charges as the sheriff reports additional arrests and bail settings.

Services For Pioneer Resident Are Pending

Funeral services for Jim Miller are pending after his sudden death at 6 30 am Wednesday in his Brownfield home. He will lie in state at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Albert D. McDowell officiating, burial in Terry County Memorial Cemetery after Masonic rites. Miller, a Brownfield native with deep military and fraternal ties, served in World War I, worked at Magnolia Station, and held longtime Masonic offices. He moved to Yoakum County as a boy, later lived in Pecos, then returned to Brownfield in 1916, marrying and raising two children. Survivors include his wife, son Larry of Houston, daughter Eleanor Mayforth of Sunnyvale, Calif., two sisters, and four grandchildren. Burial will be directed by Brownfield Funeral Home.

Rev Garrett Speaks To Credit Club In Brownfield

Rev. Jack Garrett of the First Christian Church spoke to the Brownfield Credit Club at a Thanksgiving luncheon in Pioneer Natural Gas Flame Room. He linked faith to credit systems, contrasted democracy with communism, and noted government principles.

Kerrville Camp Subject For Lions Program

Paul Farrar of the Brownfield Lions Club spoke at the Wednesday noon meeting about the Kerrville Lions Crippled Children's Camp near Kerrville. The camp began in 1953 and serves Texas children ages 7 to 16 who are blind, deaf or crippled, offering two weeks of outdoor activities and crafts. The camp now operates year round, with 160 buildings valued at over 600000 dollars, and 720 youngsters attend each summer. proceeds from Brownfield Lions Club events fund the camp. Farrar was introduced by Curtis Scott, who also received a Chair Builder Award. Three visitors attended and Rev. J Loyd Mayhew gave the day’s invocation.

Brownfield FFA C Chapter Shines At Area Contest

About 400 FFA members from 17 schools gathered at Brownfield High School for the Mesa District Leadership Contest. Brownfield won three firsts and two seconds in six events, led by Junior and Senior Chapter Conducting and Farm Skill contests. Brownfield students included Bubba Knox Temple Morris and others, with instructors Robert Becker and Stanley Dixon guiding the chapter.

Rites Held For Mrs Brownfield

Funeral services for Mire A M Brownfield were held at 3:30 pm Wednesday in the Christ church. Burial followed at the local cemetery. Survivors include her husband Walton Aflen of Carroll Christi, a daughter Ita Smith of Needesha Oklahoma, three grandchildren, and three sisters including Mrs Wingig Pendergrass of Belua.
