Brownfield Consolidated ISD students remain at or below state levels in reading math and writing in the TEA Academic Excellence Indicator System 1993-94 report heard by the school board. Jeanette Awbrey presented district results for fourth eighth and tenth grades with year over year comparisons and state gaps.
Terry County cotton picking continues after Thanksgiving with gins posting varied progress. Co op gins report 25,563 bales while T&S has 12,600 bales, about two-thirds done, and numerous modules awaiting stripping. Several other gins show two to three weeks left, some facing sandstorm damage and weather delays.
A humorous vignette features a motorist getting a traffic fine receipt from a police clerk who jokes that four receipts earn a bicycle, playfully echoing the Bible line about faith hope and charity and the idea of charity as the greatest.
The Brownfield Consolidated ISD board, in an emergency session, approved a one year group health care contract with First Health Insurance of Houston for 318 district employees. The decision follows previous tabled talks after bidding concerns and prior coverage with Tryco Insurance Associates.
Don Robertson was appointed by Terry County Judge Doug Ryburn to fill the Precinct Three seat, succeeding Jasper Jowers who resigned. A Brownfield resident since 1958 and owner of Don Robertson Electric since 1971, Robertson is a former Democratic candidate for the seat and will serve the remainder of Jowers term through Dec 31 1996. He vows to guard the budget, support jail expansion, and treat all people equally.
Forty BMS students earned 24 first through fourth place finishes at the Texas Math and Science Coaches competition held at Lubbock High School. The school led with top overall math and science teams, with standout performers including Josh O Briant Marcos Martinez Nick Hodges Tiffany Robertson and Nick Hodges Bucky Pauling Steven Kumpe. Additional high placements came from the runner up number sense team led by O Briant Hodges Martinez and Cynthia Hardy, earning second in the Small School Division sweepstakes.
