The Christmas Seal Campaign opens December 5 with a kickoff planning session at the Flame Room. Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association sponsors the yearly drive to fund its work. Captain Lee Bartlett Jr. welcomed attendees and introduced Mrs. Clifford Sharp of Lubbock, area director of the West Texas TB and RD Association. Sharp noted TB remains a leading killer worldwide with three to four million deaths annually and US deaths down from about 50,000 to 30,000, stressing the program's impact and the available drugs to kill the germ.

Harvest slow due to rains and freezes in Terry County
A killing freeze hit Terry County Friday morning with ice tipped winds and temperatures around 23 to 25 degrees. Harvests remain slow in Brownfield and areas north of Lubbock as dry weather is hoped to speed up pulling in the fields. Cotton samples continued to arrive, many from chemically defoliated cotton, with 1,936 bales classed the week ending Nov 19, bringing total 4,070 for the season. Through Nov 19 last year, 65,700 samples of the 1970 crop had been classed.
