Congratulations pour in as the Cub football team and coaching staff win the district championship Friday night. Coach Don Hendley notes post game bruises but expects players to recover by next Friday amid Thanksgiving weekend recovery and shop early guidance throughout Brownfield.
Brownfield gains seven new chamber directors for the three year term after a membership vote. They join four holdovers to form a 21 member board and will attend an Orientation Training Institute led by the U S Chamber of Commerce in Lubbock.
The Terry County Young Democrats indefinitely postpone their Victory Banquet planned for Saturday December 1 to avoid conflicting with Brownfield’s football game. President Dean Merrifield said a suitable date could not be found and the event may be rescheduled after January 1.
Brownfield and Brownwood clashed for the district crown as the Cubs edged the Mustangs 13 to 12 at Sweetwater. Teddy Howell sparked the win with a 160 rushing yards and a 93 yard opening score, while Randy Bishop led a stifling defense to clinch the title and a bi district date at Mustang Bowl Friday night.
General Telephone Company of the Southwest announced a project to modernize the Ropesville telephone exchange. Switching equipment will be replaced before May 1, 1963, and all Ropesville numbers will switch to seven digits under the ANC plan, with new numbers available around March 1 next year.
Terry County Farm Bureau will relocate to the north annex at 208 Hill Street with the main building ready January 1. The bureau earned the state membership trophy for surpassing 1,000 members in 1962. Navy Miss Tex as Farm Bureau of 1963 Waldene Garner to attend the National Convention December 9-12 in Atlanta.
The Cotton Classing Office in Brownfield reported a slight drop in classing due to bad weather. For the week ending Friday 21 543 bales were classed, down from 24 408 the prior week, with daily receipts about 4 500 samples and total through Friday 99 621.
The Texas Employment Commission reports 61,019 bales ginned in Terry County up to Friday noon. TEC compiles weekly gin reports. last year the office closed at this period, with 116,182 bales on Dec 1. The year’s crop totals about 135,000 bales.
