In This Corner columnist Jerry Jackson laments high priced Democratic fundraiser dinners headlined by John F Kennedy and his wife. He mocks the plan as a political move while joking about weather lore and radar talk, noting regional unsettled forecasts and local chatter.
Mrs. Harvey Tubb of Box 116 Wellman topped the Brownfield News contest with ten dollars prize and a perfect lead despite two upsets involving the Southwest Conference. A large tie for second included Edson Wilder John Rost Parl Foster James Foy Tanks Jackson and others, each sharing 83 cents of the 750 second and third place pot. Entries deadline was 5 pm Friday before Sunday edition.
Brownfield School Board discussed future building needs and a planned junior high project during Monday night’s meeting. A study tour of Abilene and Midland area facilities was authorized to inform site choices and bond vote prospects.
Funeral services for John Keller pioneer resident of the South Plains are set for 2 p.m. today at the Plains High School Auditorium in Plains with Rev. R Ho Meixner of Vega and Rev L D river of Plains First Methodist Church officiating. Keller, born July 10, 1876 in Kempner, ranched near Austin, moved to Yoakum County in 1907, served as sheriff 1913-1927, joined the Texas Highway Patrol, became a Texas Ranger during the Borger oil boom, retired 1940, and later held life memberships in the Texas Highway Patrol and Yellowhouse Masonic Lodge No 841. He moved back to Plains in 1956 and is survived by four daughters, one sister, nine grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
Gentle rains brought 0.6 inch to Brownfield and Terry County on Monday night and Tuesday morning per KTFY. Harvesting follows a 28 degree low as the cold snap ends a drought period. The month already shows a first freeze on Nov 29 and a 57 degree drop in 24 hours.
The Terry County Ministerial Alliance sponsors a Union Thanksgiving service at 7 pm on November 27 at the First Baptist Church. Rev Jack Barrett, alliance president, will preside. Sermon by Rev Von Worten of Calvary Baptist. other ministers include Rev J Robinson, Rev L B Edwards, Rev Paul Risser, and Rev J Loyd Mayhew. Special Thanksgiving music planned.
Terry County sees a surge in car ownership with 6 490 passenger cars registered at year start, 134 per 100 families. SRDS study links income to ownership and notes 5.5 percent two year rise, suburban growth, teen demand, easier financing, and higher incomes driving multi car households.
Brownfield police investigate multiple thefts including hub caps from parked cars at a football game site. Victims include C Dewbre, R Kemp, D Winkles, and H Aguirre. other items stolen include a transistor radio and a chrome tachometer. Several arrests for drunkenness and disturbance charges noted with various fines.
The Brownfield Lions Club noon meeting featured a film promoting tire safety titled Tommy Looks at Tires. W. K. Lindsey presided as Jack Sims opened the program. John Connally was invited to speak next Tuesday with Lubbock Lions. attendance records through October were reported. Joh Hansard received a 10 year perfect attendance pin. Lions Tournament of Talent planned for February 2021. guest Erwin Moore introduced. Lion Bob Bahin gave the invocation.
The Brownfield City Council convenes this morning in City Hall for a regular session. Officials will discuss agenda items and public concerns in a formal meeting setting.
Max Hamilton county attorney was guest speaker at the Kiwanis Club at the Westerner Cafe Monday. He spoke on the law as it applies to hot checks. Officers to be installed December 9. Twenty members and one new member Bill Davis attended.
