Billie Norman writes on learning for the elderly and the value of ongoing education. The Brownfield High School Choral Department prepares a two night musical.
Terry County farmers and about 40 000 other Texas livestock producers will receive a questionnaire from the Texas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. Jim Foy says it should be filled and returned promptly to aid official state and county livestock estimates. Sheep and goat surveys will occur in late December. The program, a joint effort of the U S Department of Agriculture and Texas Department of Agriculture, relies on producer reports.
USDA classing offices on the South Plains processed 79 000 new crop cotton samples last week bringing the season total to 178 000. Predominant grades were Middling and Strict Low Middling with light spots representing 91 percent of classed lots. Average staple length exceeded one inch with micronaire distribution and Pressley test results showing regional strength differences across Lubbock Lamesa and Townfield areas.
Alvin Herron was elected Captain of the Terry County Sheriff's Posse in regular session. New officers include Ray Christopher lieutenant Crate Snider secretary Parl Cornett corral boss Prentice Rasher wrangler. Directors chosen are Johnny Bolin Morris Smith T D Roberts Clarence Faught Fred Snitker Woodrow Collins Pete Phillips Henry Cargill. Elna Ray Christopher named Posse Queen. They plan to attend Odessa Rodeo Parade on Jan 2 and the Lawton Lawton convention Nov 22-24. A stag breakfast is set for Nov 19 at 6:30 a.m. with guests invited.
Brownfield High School Music Department presents a two night production of South Pacific at the high school auditorium. First show 7 30 p m Saturday and second 7 30 p m Monday directed by Fred Smith and Mar wrie Dodson with all seats reserved.
The United Fund campaign reaches 59 percent of its $27 211 goal, about 16 220 raised with two and a half weeks left. Ike Bailey chairs the drive with a report meeting set at the Chamber of Commerce building. Ten agencies participate including Boy Scouts Salvation Army Red Cross and United Service Organization.
Honorable George Mahon will present the Postmaster General's Citation for Excellence to Brownfield postal employees and the community for outstanding maintenance of the new facility. The ceremony is at 11 a.m. Friday in the Brownfield Post Office workroom with J. Mel Benesch delivering remarks.
Second Lt. James T. Stovall, 23, was killed November 7 in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam. He died of multiple wounds from a hostile mine while on patrol with L Company, 3rd Marine Division. A Palestine native, he coached seventh grade football at Brownfield Junior High for two months in 1967-68, enlisted in October 1967, and was commissioned in May at Quantico. He is survived by his wife Carol, a Colonial Heights Elementary teacher, and several relatives.
Rotary Club heard Brownfield High School choir members sing selections from South Pacific. The musical runs Saturday and Monday at 7 30 p m in the-school auditorium directed by Mrs Tommy Dodson with Cub Band under Fred Smith providing background music. Mike Richardson sang Some Enchanted Evening. Program chairmen were Oscar Jones and Sammy Jones. President W A Fulford filled in for Dale Durham who is overseas in the Philippines on an evangelical tour. Paul Risser gave the invocation and John Johnson led the pledge.
