Terry County Election Returns Break Speed Records

Tuesday’s general election in Terry County saw 4 721 ballots cast, a record high surpassing 1960. County Clerk Wade Yandell praised judges and counters for finishing by about 10 pm after 9 15 pm filing of the final envelope. JFK LBJ carried Terry County in 1964 with margin similar to national trends. Ed Sullivan reference noted amid reports of voter turnout over 81 percent and transfers affecting eligible voter totals. Charles Paul of the Chevrolet clan celebrated two new Chevys after a 41 day strike.

American Legion Breakfast Invites All Vets Wednesday

All area veterans and their families are invited to a Veterans Day breakfast at the American Legion Post on Seagraves Road from 5 30 to 9 00. Bailey, the post spokesman, notes the menu of bacon ham eggs and hot biscuits and adds the fire alarm refrain is traditional. Lawn flags are available for patriotic occasions via Legion members.

Brownfield City Police and Leary County sheriff's department blotters show thefts including three saddles and three bridles from a Meadow area farm on Lub bock Highway. Other losses include tools from a truck, four trailer tires, and several traffic mishaps with local residents cited on multiple dates. A number of arrests on charges from worthless checks to vagrancy are noted along with autobody in two-vehicle accidents and uninsured property damage. Police seek information on a hit-and-run or unlisted party responsible for a parked car damage incident.

Rites Held For Former Brownfield Resident Mrs Offie Cooper

Funeral services for Mrs Offie Cooper 82 were conducted at the First Christian Church with Rev. Jack Garrett and Rev. Don Balinger officiating. Burial followed at Terry County Memorial Cemetery. She lived in Brownfield from 1954 to six months ago, then moved to Carlsbad New Mexico where she died. A Mary Hardin Baylor College graduate, she taught 25 years in Gordon before moving. Survivors are two sons John Cooper and W K Cooper and four grandchildren.

Huffman Lays Out Tech Future For Rotarians

Texas Tech Coach Burl Huffman spoke at the Rotary Club meeting at the Party House. He reviewed Tech games, noted upcoming rivals West Texas State Washington State and Arkansas, praised the school's rising academics and friendless, and predicted an unlimited future for Tech.

Terry County Cotton Ginned This Week 3540 Bales

A Texas Employment Commission report shows Terry County ginned 3 540 bales of cotton this week, up 270 from last week. Season total reaches 11 169 bales, with 16 381 bales recorded by the same date last year, and TEC estimates point to about 100 000 bales for the season.

Brownfield City Council clears six item agenda

City Council met at City Hall and approved a federal request to use a section of 3rd Street for a Canadian River water line. They also accepted a State Highway Department minute order to widen Tohoka Highway and discussed cable pole upgrades with General Telephone Company reps. A public hearing on two zone changes was held, with approval of the ordinance. Mayor C. E. Ross led a 90 minute session.

Sheriff Elect Homer Parker Speaks to Brownfield Lions Club

Homer Parker, also a Brownfield Lions Club member and sheriff elect, spoke at the Brownfield Party House meeting. He outlined sheriff duties and answered questions after a program introduced by Rev. Ed Crow. W. K. Lindsey led the luncheon. Doe Lewis gave the invocation.
