Memorial Day observance pauses in Terry crowd at Legion Hall

The Terry Memorial Day service led by the Rev. Jack Garrett paused to honor veterans. About 50 to 60 attendees gathered as the American Flag was raised to half staff by Veterans of Foreign Wars members, then recited the Pledge of Allegiance before moving inside the American Legion Hall.

Ink slows readers no more in a soy ink replacement

The paper explains switching to a new low rule ink made from soybeans to replace petroleum based ink. The change reduces drying time and ink transfer, though cost rises. Brownfield sales tax rebates lag behind 1988 figures

May 1989 rebate checks show Brownfield is down 2.63 percent from May 1988 at 53 303.91, with year to date receipts at 190 113.82, down 3.42 percent from last year. Across 10 cities the May total rose to 117 859 347.59 while Plains led gains and Morton suffered the largest loss. Denver City posts a 7.17 percent year over year drop.

Brownfield honors Lawrence and Swoopes at school banquet

At Cub Gym Brownfield High School held an athletic banquet naming Bobby Lawrence and Sheryl Swoopes Mr. and Miss Cub. Swoopes swept MVP awards in Volleyball Girls Basketball and Girls Track while teammates praised her impact and all around athletic excellence.

Graduation lineup for three area high schools announced

Brownfield High School will hold graduation at 8 p.m. Friday in the big gym led by valedictorian Craig Jones and salutatorian Sonya Powers. Wellman High School plans a 8 p.m. Thursday ceremony in the WHS Auditorium with seven graduates concluding their high school careers and Cessie Wafer as valedictorian and Michael Moss as salutatorian. Union High School schedules 8 p.m. Friday in the Cafetorium with three graduates anticipated to receive diplomas and Angela Aguirre named valedictorian.

Brownfield to Host National Dribblers Tournament

Brownfield will host a National Girls Little Dribblers event running Wednesday to Saturday with games at both high school gyms and the middle school main gym. First tip is 3 30 p m Wednesday. Tickets range from 1 to 12 dollars with various passes and free entry for under six. Volunteers are sought to staff score clock refreshment and more with contact numbers for Brad Moore and Cindy Henson.

Brownfield Cubs sweep All-District 3-3A honors

Brownfield seniors earned top spots on the All-District 3-3A baseball team released late last week. MVP Chip Teague led with a .413 batting mark and 21 RBIs after a strong district pace. Teague’s outfield mates Bradley Little and Gerald Gonzares also made the squad with averages near .410 and solid RBI totals.

Rumors of UIL Action Denied by Brownfield Leader

Brownfield School Superintendent Don Hendley dismissed rumors of imminent UIL penalties after a hazing incident that suspended the Cubs baseball season. Students reported talk of a death penalty and stripping titles, but the superintendent said no cancellations or title removals occurred and all programs remain intact.
