Lynn Brisendine recalls two personal memories from graduation era. A sermon predicted grim fates in years ahead, some proven true as classmates dispersed across life. Brisendine shares the kite of parenthood and the joy and sorrow of letting children fly away, urging grads to savor their final moments.
Terry County to honor eight Gold Star Mothers at a 10 a.m. Memorial Day service Monday at the American Legion Hall 800 Seagraves Rd. Organizers seek remaining names, invite WWI veterans and Brownfield residents listed, with Rev J L Bass and several pastors delivering prayers. An honor guard from Reece Air Force Base will attend and wreaths will mark a symbolic grave. fellowship to follow.
Memorial Day schedule announced by Brownfield merchants with a mix of regular hours and variations. The list names many businesses including Auto Motive Supply, The Carpet Shop, City Fruit Stand, Clinic Pharmacy, Crystal Palace Restaurant, Dairy Queen, McDonald’s, United Supermarkets and more, noting some open with standard hours and others operating with different timing.
Jon Troutman valedictorian and Brandon Pinson salutatorian head Brownfield High School's 1988 graduating class of 134. Troutman, 18, plans business at Texas Tech aided by an $800 band scholarship. Pinson, also 18, majors in accounting at Angelo State. Graduation 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cub Gym with Project Graduation at 11 p.m. at the high school.
The 1987 88 Brownfield FFA year culminated in an awards banquet in the BHS Commons. Officers conferred honorary chapter farmer degrees on Geoff Cooper Roma Miller Milton Fariss and Jet Wilmeth. Brandon Pinson received the President's Award and several Star Greenhand Star Chapter Farmer and Star State Farmer honors were awarded to members.
Brownfield track athlete Kim Gersbach lands a Wayland Baptist University scholarship contract not a letter of intent. She will receive room board books and fees with additional alumni and student recruitment scholarships cutting one third tuition. Gersbach earned a Texas Girls Coaches Association Track All-Star nod and will be honored at the North South All-Star Game July 9 at Birdville Coliseum Haltom City.
In the Thursday Terry United Way session at the Chamber of Commerce office, President Rick Elmore oversaw elections. Kelly Moore became president, Tony Isaacs first vice president, Larry Yowell second vice president, and Rodney Keeton treasurer. New directors include Donnie Kirby Ken Willis Rodney Warren Bob Brewer Mike Hamilton Jim Hobbs Eddy Holloway Jay Andrews Raymond Lusk Charles Clark and others with agency reps Rudolph Fletcher Bullard. Special plaques recognized Moore and division chairs Bullard Hendley and Dunlap. Elmore received outgoing president plaque.
