Plans Complete For Annual Memorial Day Services Here

Memorial Day services are set for 10 a.m. Friday on the north side of the Party House in Coleman Park. Howard Henson Post No 269 American Legion sponsors the event with H D Boston as program chair and master of ceremonies. J C Harris directs most of the ritual and color guards include Jim Cloe James Qualls and Joe O Briant. Rev Jack Bailey of Calvary Baptist Church will speak. Rita Beth Adams Karen Beasley of Meadow and Linda Forsyth will place wreaths on the memorial grave.

Poppies On Sale Through Friday By Auxiliary Unit

Howard Henson Post No 269 Auxiliary begins its annual poppy sale today through Friday. Memorial poppies are handmade by disabled veterans in hospitals and convalescent workrooms, serving as therapy and helping fund rehabilitation and child welfare programs. Booths will be in town at supermarkets and banks. donations welcome.

May Grand Jury Recommends Court House Improvements

Members of the May Grand Jury submitted a special report to District Judge M. C. Ledbetter urging a cleaner better air conditioned court building and improved jury room facilities. County Water Group Forms as Amendment Drive Gathers Pace

A county water group forms to work with Water, Inc. as a constitutional amendment headed for a August vote would authorize 3.5 billion in bonds. Commencement Exercises For Brownfield High Seniors

Brownfield High School holds its first outdoor commencement at 8 p.m. with Greg Chapman vale dictory and Randy Wood salutatory addresses. 139 seniors receive diplomas as principal Jesse Geron and superintendent W. O. Caraway oversee the event with Dr. Tim Faulkenberry presenting diplomas.

Local Swimming Pool Set to Open This Saturday

Brownfield Public Schools announces the pool opening at 1 p.m. Saturday with managers Clifford Niles and Lawrence Brown. Hours are 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday. admission 50 cents adults 25 cents students, preschool free with parents.

Area Summer Recreation Program Opens June 2

The second annual Summer Recreation Program for area youth begins Monday June 2 led by James Morris. Registration for golf and square dancing starts June 2 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively with Mrs. Jo Hickman directing both activities at specified locations. Additional activities include track and field tennis gymnastics life saving and water safety with registration to follow later. Carey White coaches tennis and Morris directs track and field events open to boys and girls. Don Gipson oversees gymnastics and the life saving course runs at the pool June 15 under Morris. The highlight is the annual track event.

More than 200 area residents attended the seventh annual 19th District Boys State Dinner hosted by Howard Henson Post No 269 of the American Legion Friday night. Boys planning to attend Boys State in Austin June 7 14, along with parents and sponsors, were present. Towns represented included Abernathy Andrews Stanton Big Spring Slaton Brownfield Floydada Lamesa Littlefield Lubbock Plains Plainview Seagraves. A group from Odessa was also part of the gathering.

Kris Warren Joins Brownfield News Classifieds Staff

Kris Warren joined The Brownfield News staff Monday to head the Classified Ad Department. A 1967 Levelland High School graduate and 1969 South Plains College alumna, she edited school and SPC newspapers and led campus journalism groups. She also attended summer journalism workshops at Colorado State University and Texas Tech University.

Memorial Day mixed closures in local area

Many residents will take Memorial Day off while some offices and agencies remain closed or operate on a reduced schedule. Federal state and city offices close Friday with a three day weekend. banks stay open. Retail and governmental closures around the square mark the holiday observance.
