Brownfield High graduates with mixed emotions in 1960 ceremony

A large Brownfield High School crowd witnessed a 1960 graduation marked by tears, anxiety, and happiness. Notable honorees included Yvonne Parker, recipient of a four year McMurry College scholarship, and Anita Jo Wooley. Speakers were Don O'Dell salutatorian and Linda Brewington received AAUW scholarship recognition.

Terry Park Pool Opens for Summer Season

Terry County pool planned to open at 10 am Saturday with daily hours 10 am to 8 pm except Sundays 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Lifeguard James Morris. managers Doug Cox and Charlie Reese. Admission 25 cents students 50 cents adults. season passes 12 and 15 dollars. Swimming classes begin June 6 with two more two week sessions later, $10 fee.

Students Prepare for Multiple College Graduations Across States

Terry County residents join 254 Tech School of Engineering graduates including Charles Barrett and Albert Johnson Jr. in Lubbock. Others earn degrees at Texas, UT Austin, Oklahoma and NMMI with schedules spanning June and July commencements.

Famous Salvation Army Executive Visits Dallas Church

The Salvation Army former Texas commander Lt. Col. John A Morrison will speak at First Presbyterian Church in Dallas Sunday morning on The Certainty of the Gospel. Morrison, retired in 1958 after 38 years, will then travel to Lubbock for a Sunday night engagement.

Brownfield Board Weighs $885000 School Bond Election

Voters head to the courthouse Saturday for the Brownfield ISD bond election. Absentee ballots total 61 by Tuesday night, with May 7 primary showing 128. The plan funds a new northeast elementary site, upgrades at Jessie G. Randal, Wheatley improvements, two future site purchases, and other additions to meet accreditation. The ballot asks yes or no on issuing bonds and levying the tax.

Special School To Begin On June 6

A two month program for non English speaking pre schoolers runs June 6 to August 5 in Brownfield. Registration Friday 8:00 am to 10:30 am in Jessie Randall room with Mrs Adel la Hernandez. Parents must present birth certificate and immunization record.

Poppy Sale By VFW Posts Planned Friday and Saturday

Hand Bros Post 6794 VFW plans a two day red poppy sale to aid Terry County veterans and the National VFW Home for orphans. Poppies will be sold Friday at the Post Office and two banks, and Saturday on downtown streets by the VFW Auxiliary with Cub Packs 74 and 43.

Trio Named To District VEW Posts

Three Brownfield men were elected officers of District 7 Veterans of Foreign Wars at the Lubbock convention. Bill Rice became district manager, Walter Fulton quartermaster, and L D Bailey judge advocate. Also named were Travis Hoover senior vice commander and Jessie Merle Kirkland junior vice commander.

Court Orders New 50-Star Flag and County Actions

Commissioners Court met to approve a bid from Western Machinery of Lubbock for two motor graders for Precinct 4, authorize sale of a county lot in Meadow, and fund $75 for two 4-H teams heading to state contests in College Station on June 6. A new 50 star flag will replace the 48 star banner before July 4.
