Wellman and Plains plan Friday commencement ceremonies at 8 p.m. with Wellman Class of 1994 led by valedictorian Heather Luker and salutatorian Amanda Baldwin. Plains seniors include valedictorian Lenny Dean Marrow and salutatorian Phillip Jay Rushing.
Brownfield High School Spirit of the Plains Band closed its year with the Bond and Beyond Band Banquet in the commons. Karen Flowers delivered an invocation, David Perez welcomed attendees, and awards honored outstanding freshmen through seniors. Richard Herrera and Jamie Shipp presented Band Awards and special honors including the Sousa Award and Director's Award.
Four defendants pleaded guilty before Judge Ray Anderson in 121st District Court this week. Pablo Leija received an eight year probated sentence for possession of a forged instrument and faces fines restitution and costs plus a 30 day Terry County jail term. Weldon Travis Roberts pled guilty to unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and will serve a term as determined by the court. Outstanding student awards and band honors are noted in the following calendar-style recap with names including Aaron Stewart Bridget Henderson James Panda David Perez Amber Lanning Malizza Harvill Jesse John Phillip Sousa Award recipient D J Director's Awards Philip Rolan and Julie Franco, and the upcoming year’s band leadership appointments.
Heather Luker and Amanda Jo Baldwin named the top two graduates of Wellman High School for 1994. Luker, valedictorian, is the daughter of Ronald and Margaret Luker. Baldwin, salutatorian, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Jerold Baldwin. Luker participated in FHA Spanish Club basketball tennis and earned multiple honors across four years.
Darla Swain, certified in English, math and science, becomes librarian at Brownfield Middle School citing family time and a desire to promote reading as key reasons. Swain began teaching in 1980 after graduating Brownfield High School in 1977 and previously taught at BHS for four years.
