Youth Arrest at Middle School Over Protection Racketeering

Brownfield police report a 15 year old black male was arrested at Middle School for allegedly taking money from younger students in exchange for protection. A hearing is pending before the county judge. Separate reports note Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission raids May 6 led to arrests for illegal possession of alcohol. Madaleeno D Morales 38 faced $147.50 fines and costs after 56 cans of beer were seized at 301 W Lake. Elva Valdez 36 was charged after 99 cans found in a hole in a floor with $247.50 fines. Additional thefts include a revolver from North 12th Street, a pistol from a vehicle at a local club, and several tool and battery thefts from local businesses. Vandals damaged Coleman Park amphitheatre.

Lightning Strikes Brownfield KFC Window Heavy Damage Studied

A fierce electrical storm hit Brownfield shortly after midnight causing a plate glass window to break at the Kentucky Fried Chicken on Seagraves Highway. Damages estimated 200 to 300 dollars, with a municipal light outage lasting about two hours. Reports of a tornado were false but caused concern as dark clouds and frequent lightning were seen. Brownfield received about half an inch of moisture. Meadow 12 miles north saw over an inch with marble size hail. Plains faced one of its worst hail storms with widespread damage to buildings and vehicles.

Commissioners Appoint New Youth Officer for Terry County

Rodney Crews was named juvenile officer by the Terry County commissioners court effective May 19. He is 28, holds a BA in social welfare and psychology from Texas Tech, is a Vietnam veteran, and has worked with the Big Brother Program in Lubbock. His wife Donna works at the local welfare office.

Mrs Lee Brownfield Becomes West Texas Arthritis Chapter Chair

Jane Brownfield of Brownfield, long resident since 1931, has been named chairman of the local unit of the Arthritis Foundation. She described the effort as in early stages and announced the West Texas Chapter, Plains Division, of the foundation.

Lepard Tops State 880 Wins First at Austin Meet

Robert Lepard, Brownfield High junior, earned first in the 880 yard dash at the state meet in Austin last weekend. He displays his growing collection of gold medals and trophies amid praise from family Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lepard of 1215 E. Hester. Newsnote by Stan McNutt.

Commissioners Seek Hospital Board Aid In Tax Evaluation Hike

A Terry County commissioners delegation led by Judge Herbert Chesshir and County Auditor L. D. Bailey met with the hospital board to discuss raising property evaluation to fund county obligations while seeking a tax cut for hospital levies. The board agreed to lower the rate from 36 to 31 cents, effective with 1975 taxes, potentially adding about 95 000 dollars annually to the county. Wayne Ratisseau was sworn in as chairman by Pat McMillan during the session.
