City and County crews advance Gillham park project turning a playa lake into two ponds and developing paths while preserving existing trees. Texas Tech landscape students proposed a design with picnic areas playgrounds and jogging trails as the beautification committee chooses Tracy Smith’s plan for See Park.
The Brownfield City Council rejected a request to extend a water rate discount to totally disabled citizens on fixed incomes. The proposal, discussed during a lengthy Thursday morning session, would have mirrored the senior citizen discount and affected the water department budget by about $4,664.
Tickets for the Brownfield High School Athletic Banquet are available at the athletic office. The Saturday event features Dallas Cowboy safety Bill Bates as principal speaker. Tickets cost 8 for adults and 5 for students. Banquet begins at 6 30 p.m. catered by H Bar C. Bates, a Knoxville native, gained All American and All Southeastern Conference honors at the University of Tennessee and later joined the Cowboys.
The Center of Faith will give away cheese butter and honey on Monday May 7 from 9 to 12 and 1 to 4 and on Wednesday May 9 from 9 to 12 and 1 to 3. Registration is welcome both days. Address is 1219 South 4th at the church.
The Brownfield Chamber of Commerce Board outlined preliminary plans to sponsor the Regional Girls Little Dribblers Tournament for a second year, with May 17-19 set at Brownfield Middle School Gym. The group also reported on Houston Oilers game receipts and expenses, plus board changes and nursing center news.
The Terry County Sheriff's Department arrested Larry Don McGinnis an 18 year old Brownfield man Thursday afternoon charging him with indecency with a child. Bail was set at 35000 by Justice of the Peace Carolyn Proctor. He remained in Terry County jail Friday afternoon in lieu of bond. The alleged incident occurred about six weeks ago and delays were attributed to a breakdown in agency communication and a detective’s Army Reserve involvement. A letter to the editor in the Brownfield News from the victim’s mother helped revive the case. Police Chief J T Churchwell said he would accept responsibility and noted juvenile cases are handled by Child Welfare.
