Brownfield Minors win National Basketball Championship
The Brownfield All-Star Little Dribblers Minor League team captured the national title with a 60 to 54 victory over Mexia Saturday afternoon at the Texan Dome on the South Plains College campus in Levelland. The larger Black Cats handed the local Senior League team a setback.

News earns TSTA School Bell Award at Houston convention
Julie Combes Rita Kisor and Katrinka Park attended the Texas State Teachers Association convention in Houston representing Terry County Teachers Association. News publisher Lynn Brisdine accepted the TSTA School Bell award for 1988 education coverage. The News was among 46 winners nationwide from 607 nominations in semi weekly small market. Felan earns State berth in distance race at Ratliff Stadium
Brownfield runner Mike Felan surged to win the 1600 at the Region I 3A Boys Track Meet in Odessa with a 4:35.62, earning the Cubs their first state qualifier in years. Brownfield finished sixth with 31 points after a scoring adjustment moved them ahead of Canyon. Felan, who flashed patience early, seized the lead on the third lap and held off Canyon's Jeremy Moon.

The Brownfield Middle School Red Express Band captured the Regional UIL Sweepstakes award on April 27 in Wolfforth.
