Terry County defies experts as population dips slow

Lynn Brisendine notes Terry County’s population declined 0.9 percent from 1990 to 1996, yet Brownfield and the South Plains rally with new employers. The piece credits local citizens for reversing trends, cites the Court Residential Treatment Center, Intermediate Sanction Facility, Jim Rudd facility, and future plans around the peanut industry and value added processing for jobs and growth by 2000.

Brownfield Police seize drugs in three local busts

Brownfield police arrested three men March 12 at the Economy Inn on West Main for manufacturing or delivering cocaine and found marijuana on one suspect. March 17 at a West Austin Street residence yielded 2.3 grams of cocaine and a second drug charge. March 18 a 44 year old man on West Legion faced similar charges with about 2.2 grams found. Lieutenant Huston said the arrests removed about $1,000 worth of drugs and $800 in cash, calling the series a positive step in fighting the drug problem.

Texas Historical Commission honors Brownfield mural in Panhandle history

The Texas Historical Commission honored a 1940 mural in Brownfield depicting ranchers fighting a grass fire. Painted by Frank Mechau, the work was one of three statewide murals copied for the Institute of Texas Culture catalog. Roni Morales presented copies and highlighted the New Deal program that placed artists in offices and post offices across Texas. The mural remains in the Brownfield Post Office building, now housing the Brownfield Police Department.

West Texas Children’s Centre to open by end of April

Terry County Commissioners reached agreement with David Wood Construction and WTCC officials after extending the completion date to March 28 1997 and agreeing to a $3 000 donation in lieu of liquidated damages for March and April 1997 The facility should be in operation by late April with state inspections and license approval pending Punch list items and architect walk through dates were discussed with plans for a March 31 or April 1 walk through and administration building progress eyed for March 26 final operation target end of April

Waddell Finds Home Back In Terry County roots

Danny Waddell left Terry County for Phoenix for eight years then returned nine years ago to run Waddell Promotions. He covers from Andrews to Lubbock with clients as far as Dallas. His family includes wife Linda, son Steven in Lubbock and daughter Amy in Canyon. He chairs Brownfield Chamber of Commerce Red Coats and enjoys camping, fishing, and golf.
