Parents must enroll boys Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the junior high auditorium. Open to boys born Aug 1 1949 through July 31 1954, including last year’s players. President Joe Starkey urged a parent present at enrollment to keep the program, warning that lack of support could curtail the entire league.
Explosion at Challis Baptist Church parsonage area Friday caused a fire that leveled the building to the foundation. No injuries reported. Firefighters from Brownfield and area residents fought the blaze despite the blast shaking nearby homes. Services moved to First Baptist Church facilities as investigators probe a possible butane gas leak.
Brownfield Jaycees nominate the 1962-63 Legion slate at The Party House with officers including Robison for president and Badgwell for vice president. Installation planned April 7 at Brownfield Country Club as hundreds expected for District 19 convention events.
The United Commercial Travelers of America Brownfield council meets at 7 p.m. in IOOF Hall. The March session will elect officers for 1962-63. current president is Billy B Moore of 712 East Oak. The meeting is chaired by Brownfield Rebekahs.
Two Terry men assume key posts in the Texas Sheriffs Posse Association Crate Snider of Ropesville becomes president and Ray Christopher of Route 5 serves as secretary treasurer Snider has long served as Terry County Posse secretary while Christopher is a longtime correspondent for the group A Terry County Cutting Horse Association was organized with Bill Gordon of Tahoka Highway named president and posse captain Karen Smith daughter of Morris and Mrs Smith Route 5 is the new queen of the Terry band
The Sock and Buskin drama group at Texas Tech accepted seven pledges including Juanice Newbill, daughter of Mr and Mrs Mickey Newhill of Tohoka Road. She is a 6 1 graduate of Brownfield High School.
Martha Thomas a Brownfield Junior High student and 1962 Terry County champ will represent Terry April 7 in Lubbock at the regional spelling bee sponsored by the Avalanche Journal. She earned the trip by defeating Linda Horton in a Saturday morning showdown at school while sister Mary last year represented the county at Lubbock. The April event aims for a trip to the National Spelling Bee in Washington.
A Monday information session on cattle feeding in West Texas will start with a meal at 7 p m at the Legion Hall in Brownfield. Sponsoring firms include Western Grain & Farm Store First National Bank Goodpasture Grain Milling Company Brownfield State Bank and Brownfield Savings & Loan.
Octavino Miranda, son of Manuel and Viola Miranda of Levelland Highway, joins Easter Seals efforts in Terry County. The first grader, born with leg and spine issues, received shoes, braces, and travel for treatment funded by the campaign. His family of ten struggles with medical costs as local supporters and officials recognize ongoing care and progress.
Jim North, a county sanitarian, urges immediate fly prevention actions to curb the fly population this summer. He warns ideal breeding ground is garbage cans and stresses residents must take precautions now before the season.
