Members of the Terry County Commissioners Court will convene in regular session Monday at 10 oclock in the Courthouse. County Judge R A Simms will preside over the meeting.
The Brownfield City Council approved the fiscal year starting April 1 1965 after a public hearing with no speakers. City Manager Eunice Jones outlined budget changes noting increases in General Fund Power and Light Water Sewer and Garbage funds and a $400 000 rise in assessed tax valuation while keeping the tax rate at 1.30. The meeting also urged opposition to state bills regulating longevity pay for police and firemen and discussed adding an alley west of West Ward Elementary School for garbage truck access.
The Brownfield General Hospital board supports House Bill No. 14 to authorize Texas Tech to establish a medical department but opposes financing the teaching hospital by broad regional tax districts. The board favors a Terry County hospital district to fund a local, modern facility, arguing that a regional district would strip Terry County of its own control. It notes Terry County’s AAA matching funds and urges continued local efforts while resisting area planners pushing for broader tax pools to back Lubbock’s needs. The letter defends no hostility to Texas Tech and calls for local hospital autonomy amid ongoing legislative consideration.

Services pending at Brownfield Funeral Home for Tommy Neil Cooper 32 who died early Saturday at Henry’s Col Tex Service Station in Brownfield He lived in the area since 1937 and was pronounced dead about 4 30 am by Justice of the Peace L A Rhyne Cooper was a Korean War veteran and survived by his parents three brothers and one sister involved in a welding business and custom combining operations before his death
In the 121st Judicial District Court session at the Terry County Courthouse Judge M C Ledbetter presided. J R Reid was acquitted of theft by false pretext while Junior Brown faced burglary and the jury hung. Seven guilty pleas were entered.
Severe cold moved into Texas and Terry County late in the week bringing frigid weather. Saturday morning temperatures plunged to eight degrees as clear skies prevailed and a rare crystallized silver frost sparkled across the area.
Funeral services for Gene Jackson were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sage Terrace Baptist Church with Rev. Ray Turner officiating. Burial was in Terry County Memorial Cemetery under Brownfield Funeral Home direction. Jackson, 43, died Thursday at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston after three and a half weeks as a patient. Survivors include his wife, two sons Bill and Mike, one daughter Sharon, a brother Frank, five sisters, and several in law and extended family. He owned Gene's Motor Service on West Main Street in Brownfield. Pallbearers were Harvey George, Hubert Heathcoat, Leon Goldston, John Holcombe, Curley McKee, and George Kempson.
A special fund is started to aid the family of Gene Jackson who died Thursday afternoon at St. Luke's Hospital Houston after heart surgery. Jackson lived at 1207 E Broadway with his wife and children and ran Gene's Automotive Service. Donations may be mailed to Box 446 in care of the Gene Jackson Fund.
