Town rallied during a snowbound weekend with many helping neighbors. Charles Paul Jimmy Knowles and others assisted nurses and doctors while Punch Nelson’s Brencho aided transport.
In Brownfield Saturday morning residents debated whether snow or grain causes a sales surge. A 17 inch snow triggered a rush for snow shovels at hardware stores, some of which stayed open while others closed. Twenty shovels were sold that day, as some merchants improvised by delaying staff or staying home.
Dallas based First National Bank of Dallas won the $2,154,000 school bonds at 5.67885 percent after other bids at 5.68418 and 5.77918 percent. Joe Smith of Lubbock opened the sale for the Independent School District amid a busy meeting with textbook committee, Head Start plans, and library and Field House additions approved.
Brownfield Kiwanis members urged to sell tickets for the annual Pancake Supper set 5 to 8 p m Friday in the Intermediate Cafeteria. Tickets cost 1 and children six and under enter free. Proceeds fund youth activities. Paul Risser spoke on Central American mission work and DeMolay Week activities were highlighted by Tommy Jones and Bobby Craig.
Meadow Farmers Cooperative Gin holds a dinner and meeting with Meadow High School students as honored guests. Dr Earl Williams of Dallas will speak on Are You Proud of your Name. D S Carroll presides as a three year director is elected and Hugh Thomas presents the audit. Vanns Catering serves from 5 to 7 p m at the Meadow school bus barn with the program at 7 30 p m in the school auditorium.
Lawrence Green wins grand champion steer a 920 pound Hereford in the heavy class. Lee Martin as reserve champion with a 975 pound Black Angus. Randall Speed and Randy Henson claim grand and reserve lamb titles. Multiple blue and red ribbons awarded across lamb and Hereford heavy classes with numerous 4-H and FFA members named.
The Brownfield Civil Air Patrol unit announces a special exercise on April 5 to test CAP communications on full scale operations using existing frequencies and equipment. An Armed Forces Day event is planned for May 17 with invited groups including American Legion Post 269 National Guard Civil Defense and local bands. Adjutant Jim Cloe leads preparations and invites Brownfield and surrounding towns’ bands to attend.
Oil is found west of town near the Plaza Restaurant alarmed Britt Pounds and assistants as storm halted black topping of his parking area. Weather chaos spreads as oil appears and unsettles local plans. Ronnie Bishop new assistant manager at Piggly Wiggly arrives from Andrews with family moving this week.
