Three weeks after Lloyd Hahn doubted his crop the vetch finally paid off as a few warm days boosted growth. The legume yielded promising returns after earlier struggles and near abandonment.
A Lions Club tradition uses a rotating "it" to pick a handshake winner, while Air Force recruiters rate handshakes on a meter. Voters discuss a $175,000 park swimming pool project with wide support, and farmers Hahn and Rowden compare vetch and peas as cover crops on their Plains area farm.
Placid Oil Co No 9-B Muldrow will drill to 10500 feet in Section 19 Block D-14 PSL Survey 14 miles NW of Brownfield to test Wolfcamp production in Adair Northeast Wolfcamp field area. Rotary drilling underway below 8200 feet in lime shale. Roadmap and spot details given for the venture with Mid-West Oil Corp and White Eagle Oil Co No 1-A Gueterstoh targeting 9500 feet.
South Plains Health Unit officials and the Terry County School Superintendent announced a plan to vaccinate all first and second graders before school ends. The free program uses Salk vaccine, distributed in county schools under Dr R B Johnson, with parental requests required.
Four people died early Sunday near Wellman after a head on collision with a propane truck. Victims were 14-year-old Charles Hensley, Donald Reid 26, Wilma Carrigan 20, Bonnie Thompson 22, and Otis Ellison 24 and Wilma Ellison from Levelland. The truck driver was James Gober of Lubbock. The Oldsmobile crossed the center line and the left half of the car was sheared off before stopping on the highway. The truck skidded 153 feet and blocked both lanes. The car was loaded for transport to Brownfield. Ellison and his sister-in-law Wilma Ellison were hospitalized.
The Brownfield City Council of Parents and Teachers sponsors an adult discussion titled Parenthood in a Free Nation. The program, funded by the Fund For Adult Education, aims to aid parents teachers and adults in helping youths adjust to development related problems. A planning meeting is set for 7:30 pm Monday March 21 at the high school.
The annual Tractor Maintenance school is set for Saturday at Brownfield High School FFA Ag Shop. Local dealers join in the program with 9:30 am start and a 30 minute show. Morning sessions cover engine basics hydraulic systems and operator manuals. Afternoon classes resume at 1 pm with topics on engine cooling and fuel air mix. A Tractor Operators contest follows at 3 pm with jackets awarded to top drivers in two divisions. Alvin Davis is superintendent of the school.
Texas IAB dismantled a bootlegging operation near Terry County before noon on Thursday arresting Bobby Oden for possession of whiskey and gin. Officers confiscated multiple brands including Old Charter Seagram V.O Walker's Gin Hill and Hill Old Crow and Sunnybrook in pints and quarts.
Butler-Kimmell Co. will act as architects on the proposed county park and swimming pool project. Jack King represents the firm, which will provide preliminary sketches to show voters how funds will be used. The county is not obligated if the bond issue fails. A bond company was also contracted. Petitions seek $175 000 bonds to be paid in 20 years or less, to be presented at the March 28 Court meeting where election date will be set.
City Council authorized preliminary engineering work for a summer paving program. About 30 blocks are signed, with residents urged to file petitions with the City Secretary. Only blocks with solid signatures will be considered, no leave outs.
Alvin Davis was elected president of the Brownfield Junior Chamber of Commerce. New officers include Gene Roseboom as first vice president Rudy Winchester as second vice president Frank Gorton as treasurer and Earl Jones as state director. New directors are L Richardson Bob Scott Jimmie Billings Bob Payne Neil Thompson and retiring president B Hutson.
Dr. Gaston Foote urged the value of the human element at the Brownfield banquet before about 200 attendees. J. O. Gillham introduced him. new directors were named, and 90 firms joined, bringing total chamber membership to 260. The year featured park improvements and Oil Progress Week plus a $5 million oil industry income boost.
