Primm is the sole mayoral candidate as the April 6 election nears with filing closed. Henry Chisolm seeks re election to the council while John J. Kendrick heads the other council seat. Alva J. Geron runs for City Secretary and Luther Jones for Marshal.
Funeral services for Byron Leslie Walker aged 62 of Wellman were held at 2 30 PM in the First Methodist church of Brownfield with ministers from Wellman assisting. He died Tuesday at the Veterans hospital in Big Spring after years of illness. A member of several fraternal orders and the Methodist church, he moved to Terry county 18 years ago to farm in Wellman. Survivors include his wife and two brothers James and William Walker of Independence Mississippi. Burial followed at Terry County Memorial cemetery under Brownfield Funeral Home direction.
Eliseo Chico Padillo pleads guilty in County Court to illegal possession of alcoholic beverages and receives one year in jail and a $1,000 fine from County Judge Herb Chesshir. An Appeal Division reversed a prior Padillo case on testimony of prior convictions while another Padillo case resulted in a $1,000 fine and six months in jail. Six juveniles pleaded guilty to vandalism at local facilities, declared delinquent and placed with their parents as cases continue.
Rev. Jones Weathers of the First Baptist Browfield announces that Dr. T. A. Patterson of Beaumont will lead the spring revival at the First Baptist church. Patterson, noted evangelist and Baptist Standard contributor, will preach March 21 through 28 with Ed Rogers directing music. Local residents are invited to attend all services.
County Judge Herb Chesshir announced bids will be opened Tuesday for 12 miles of Farm-to-Market roads in Terry County in Austin. The project spans 8 miles on the Levelland road north from the Lubbock highway and 3 miles linking the Gomez road to the Seagraves highway. Negotiations with Oil Mill over U S 62 right of way are settled except three remaining lots, including Magnolia Camp. Santa Fe railroad and Big Drive-in theatre right of way remain unresolved. a condemnation court met Wednesday, but a final decision is not yet reached.
The Phillips Seismic crew, about 30 families, seeks two bedroom furnished houses in Brownfield after moving out about a year ago. The Chamber of Commerce hopes to rehouse them locally, not in Lamesa, to support their return and stabilize the area.
The Terry County Citizens' Traffic Commission reports pledges of support from county and city governments as it presses for public backing of its traffic safety program. Chairman Grady Elder recounts writing a confidential letter to himself after a traffic violation, noting the process hides driver identity and focuses on education and responsibility.
The Plains Fine Arts club invites everyone to a Sunday 3 pm community sing at First Baptist Church Plains. The event aims to entertain and to record home town music for soldiers in Korea, with all invited to bring books and favorites for chorus and listening.
The Terry County Red Cross campaign opens with a slave auction at 2 p.m. on the courthouse lawn led by Crawford Taylor. Prizes include Hutson Ver non Townes and local community leaders as bidders, with proceeds aiding the national fund.
County Tax Collector Data Cates reports license plate sales at 1,293 to date with 1,000 passenger 133 commercial 25 truck and tractor and 25 trailers. He estimates about 4,000 plates remain to be sold at an average of 266 per day.
The Division of Post Office Services has authorized mounted mail delivery for 11 more blocks in the East Side, effective after street markers and curb receptacles are erected. Areas include East Hill, East Main, East Broadway, and East Tate blocks, plus Mar-San apartments and trailer courts. Delivery will be by truck with curbside boxes required. Completion of markers may delay service until June 1.
Plans for the April 3-4 19th District American Legion Convention in Brownfield were boosted by the announcement that National Commander Ann Cowell will attend the Sunday session. Local Commander Lynn Nelson said committees are at work to bring local membership to full strength before the event.
The Tokio Wolfcamp field gains a new offset as Humble Oil plans to drill Vera V Wilmeth No 1 in Yoakum county dropping to 10100 feet. The 660 foot offset from Section 4 Block K PSL Survey places this North Texas operation three miles south of Tokio. A prior completion at Honolulu No 300 F W Eiling ton yielded 203 barrels daily with 1921 gas oil ratio.
