The Brownfield City Council schedules a public hearing for March 15 on the proposed FY budget covering April 1 to March 31. All residents may speak for or against items in the budget during the regular March Council meeting in City Hall. The council also plans to appoint three members to Brownfield Zoning.
Last midnight was the filing deadline for candidacy in the April 3 alderman election. Voters will cast ballots from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at City Hall Lobby. As of Saturday noon, filed candidates include Mayor Jess McWherter and L. J. Richardson. Names of incumbents with expiring terms include W. A. Bynum Jack DuBose and Robert L. Noble. Incumbents not expiring are John L. Cruce and Robert Lee Craig.
Terry County Farm Bureau starts a week long drive with a 6 30 breakfast in the Pioneer Flame Room. The goal is 1166 members matching last year. Millard Shivers of Waco will address the group. Lewis Waters of Tokio will direct the drive. County Judge Raymond A Simms proclaims Parm Bureau Week. Awards are planned Saturday for the top signer. Leon Lepard won boots last year. The drive targets TPB voting strength at the 1942 convention and top five percent in Texas. Shivers leads the nine man department. he began with the Texas Farm Bureau in 1936 when 65311 members existed.
A.C Bishop Brownfield Chamber of Commerce manager and new program planning committee chairman will organize one day workshops in Mineral Wells on April 9 Big Spring on April 16 and Canyon on April 1 He will be assisted in Big Spring by Dennis Q Lilly WTCC director and Russell Willis San Angelo chamber manager The committee includes Edith Gay Ralph Duncan Bill Thompson Jess Everett Charlie Young and Winnie Lu Bounds Bishop will also preside the final day of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives Association convention in Brownwood August 17-18.
Assessor-collector Stanley Miller announced the city completed 92.9 percent of total tax collections for 1969, a notable rise from the previous year.
Gov. Price Daniel designates Public Schools Week in Texas with activities in Brownfield Wellman Union and Meadow schools. Union High hosts theScience Fair with awards at 3 p.m. Tuesday and parent visits across all campuses. Various lunch and open house events scheduled. buses run Thursday afternoon. Teachers attend a Lubbock conference. 3500 South Plains teachers expected. district includes multiple counties.
Brownfield star Howard Hurd Jr. won the 120 yard high hurdles in 15.1 seconds and the 86 yard low hurdles in 19.7 as Brownfield claimed the invitational title at Cub Stadium. Frankie Flores won the mile in 4:32.6 while Port Stockton's squad led the team standings with 86 points as about 300 South Plains athletes from 22 schools competed.
Brownfield High School stages Carson McCullers drama The Member of the Wedding Thursday at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Cast includes Sandra Turner and Dorothy McDonald with price 1 for adults 75 cents for students.
Terry Sailor aboard the 75,000 ton aircraft carrier USS Constellation serves as aviation ordnanceman Second class. He is the son of Mr and Mrs W E Pielder Route 5. The Constellation, largest conventional attack carrier, was commissioned last October.
Terry motorists are reminded that Texas law requires all registered vehicles to have valid inspection stickers displayed by midnight April 15 Set. A E Roberts, supervisor of the Brownfield Area, Texas Highway Patrol, urged residents to inspect early to avoid fines and last minute rushes. Local stations include Tudor Sales, Tim's Safety Lane, Jack Bailey Chevrolet, Ford and Son Brake Service, Jack's Garage, Darwin Reynolds Ford, Decker's Garage, Craig Motor Co, Christian Auto Electric, Meadowfield Shop, Olds Cadillac, Nash Garage.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Cox visits Brownfield for a three stop appearance blitz. He will address Jaycees at noon, host a public reception at 3 to 5 pm, and headline a 7 pm banquet at Brownfield High School with Rep. Kenneth Kohler introducing him. Local hosts organize a large GOP reception.
