Smith gets 30 years for aggravated sexual assault

Judge Kelly Moore in the 121st District Court sentenced Edwin Ledelle Smith of Brownfield to 30 years for aggravated sexual assault of a 13 year old girl in August 2004. Smith, 39, could have faced 5 to 99 years, with parole eligibility after half his term. The district attorney cited multiple sexual encounters with the juvenile and noted potential additional charges. Also sentenced this week were Preston Jule Blake to 18 months for burglary and linked methamphetamine charges, and Luciano Gutierrez Trejo to five years for felony driving while intoxicated, with further court costs and fees listed.

Firecracker Run marks Texas oldest road race on July 4

Texas oldest continuous road race, the Firecracker Run in Coleman Park, will hold its 36th running on Monday morning July 4. Children One Mile Run starts 7 40 a.m. with 3 and 10 mile races at 8 a.m. Pre-register by July 3 either by phone or mail. Medals and ribbons awarded across age groups with engraved overall winners and awards at finish line.

Commissioners raise the roof in Terry County meeting

Terry County Commissioners spent nearly two hours Monday discussing courthouse roof repairs with Burnett Hunt of Grimes & Associates. He recommended a Duralast roof lasting 15 to 20 years, but the $50,000 to $60,000 cost cannot be funded this year, so the project was tabled for six months while funds are sought in next year’s budget.
