Yarborough Plans Campaign Speech Here Saturday

Ballot Draw Sets Democratic Primary Positions

Ballot positions were drawn Monday for the Democratic Primary on July 28 under County Chairman L M Lang. The ballot lists 77 names with county and state level races, including a racial referendum hot topic this week. The county contendents include Cobb, Smith, Corbin, Hiewers Jr, Nak, Copeland unopposed for County Attorney, and a sheriff’s race featuring multiple candidates. Precinct and county conventions are scheduled, with a state convention in Fort Worth on Sept 11 and a second primary if needed on August 25. The referendum asks for and against boxes on each item.

Joe Cobb Services Held Today in Lubbock

Final services for Joe Cobb 48 former Brownfield resident who died of a heart attack in his Lubbock home were held at Lubbock First Christian Church with Rev. Dudley Strain officiating. Burial followed at Tech Memorial Park Cobb moved from Dallas in 1928 to Lubbock in 1942 and led Cobb Investment Company and Joe Cobb Investment Company as a founder of Cobb's Department Stores and partner with J A Stephens in the on business.

Negro Section Wins Award for Clean-Up

The Negro section of Brown Field was recognized this morning as top in the recent Clean Up Paint-Up Pix Up campaign. Mayor Archelow Kiere presented an engraved plaque to Mrs. Carre S. Osister Smith, pastor of the Hester Memorial Methodist Church, with praise for the city’s Negroes and their efforts.

Gomez High Alum Returns as Iraqi Animal Science Leader

George B. McLeroy, Gomez High School alumnus and doctor of animal science, spent 3½ years in Baghdad leading the Animal Science Division at the Iraq College of Agriculture. He will depart for Beirut in late June to join the American Calpe Time Capacity, with his wife Meheray joining in August for a three year Near East stay.
