Sorghum Stubble Reduces Erosion and Conserves Moisture for Terry County Farmers

Terry County farmers report definite benefits from managing sorghum stubble last winter. Twofold gains include reduced wind erosion and moisture conservation. Storms on November 25 and 29 caused less damage on stubbled land, protecting young wheat and reducing need for tillage. Residue also aided water infiltration after April rains, with runoff differences between bare and stubble-covered land. Managing crop residue requires extra work but yields worthwhile protection.
