Father’s Day roots traced to Mrs. Dodd in Spokane
The 75 year old national observance began in Spokane Washington through Mrs. John Bruce Dodd who proposed a day for fathers. It spread after local ministers and YMCA backing, with proclamations by Spokane mayor and state governor and later federal backing by Wilson and Coolidge. Red roses honored living fathers and white roses honored deceased fathers.
