Castorbean Seen as Viable Texas Cash Crop

Texas farmers eye castorbeans as a potential new cash crop with strong oil demand under contract with processors. In 1962 235000 acres produced 34 million pounds of beans, irrigation dominated, average yield 1434 pounds per acre, projection 16 million pounds of oil for 1963. Wheat Harvest Hit by Rains in Panhandle South Plains

The Wheat Harvest Control Office in Amarillo reports heavy damage to wheat across Panhandle and South Plains due to continued rains wind and hail. With favorable weather harvest should progress once fields dry. Dry-land in Borger Spearman Perryton Dalhart Channing Stratford Dumas yields about seven bushels per acre, irrigated about 25. A Perryton temporary office opened at the Fairgrounds with Jesse D. Young in charge. Little field areas around Muleshoe Dimmitt Farwell Hereford show harvest prospects 25 percent below average and will begin this week.

Wylie Completes Naval Recruit Training Graduation

Melvin H. Wylie son of Mr and Mrs Rupert T Wylie of Meadow completes nine week Naval Training Center San Diego California recruit training. He participated in graduation ceremonies May 17 with about 3000 men in the weekly Recruit Brigade Review. Training covered naval orientation etiquette traditions ordnance gunnery first aid swimming seamanship shipboard routine sentry duty physical fitness and drill.

Ex-Judge G P Beane Rites Held in Plains

Judge G P Beane 78 former Denver City and Yoakum County official was buried at Plains Cemetery after 2 30 p m services in First Baptist Church of Plains. Beane moved from Bodcaw Arkansas to Yoakum County in 1939 and served eight years as Yoakum County Judge later holding roles as justice of the peace and city judge. He led a long career in education and local governance with church and Masonic ties. Survivors include his wife two daughters a brother and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
