High Plains hailstorm ends 2001 cotton prospects
The May 30 hailstorm across the Texas High Plains damaged cotton from the New Mexico line to Snyder with gusts up to 105 mph. Early estimates show up to 250,000 acres affected, with many fields possibly unreplantable due to planting date constraints and lingering damage. Cottonseed payments of 15.34 per ton were released May 31, one month earlier than last year, and boll weevil trapping mapsaid to help timing of mitigation.
