Memorial Day Veterans Honored At Service In Terry County

Memorial Day services conducted by Howard Henson Post No 269 featured Rev. Frank Brooks of First United Presbyterian Church as principal speaker. He cited Psalm 137 and honored Gold Star Mothers from Terry County with corsages, while veterans and auxiliary members posted wreaths and the flag, followed by a reception for Gold Star Mothers at the Party House.

May Brings Varied Weather In Terry County

May delivered a rambunctious mix of weather across Terry County and Brownfield. Temperatures ranged from 1 degree to 95, with dust storms, hail, heavy rains, fog, and wind gusts to 70 mph. Official moisture for the month was 1.97 inches, lifting year total to 7.10 inches as spots varied widely.

Equalization Board Meets in Brownfield for Public Hearing

The Brownfield Equalization Board met Monday June 1 with Dale George elected chairman and Ross Campbell as vice chair. Odell Sears named secretary. Board members Speedy Lindsey Robert Smith and Billie Moore attended. Taxpayers may meet on June 16 at 9 a.m. at City Hall to discuss values. 1969 tax collection stands at 93.57 percent with pending suits awaiting payment or court action. Well-Baby Clinic Set To Open In Terry County

County Judge W T Mc Kinney led the Terry County Community Action meeting as Bruce Zorns was absent. The Well-Baby Clinic will start at the Neighborhood Center on June 9 from 9 to 11 a.m. for children from birth to two years who have not seen a physician. No charge, with Dr Morris Knox in charge and Mrs Ray Anderson, Mrs Guy Belew, and Mrs Morris Knox assisting. The Evening Lions Club sponsors the clinic, held on the second Tuesday of each month. A separate program for seniors 55 and older will begin at the Center soon. 155 individuals have been invited to a luncheon June 8 at noon at the Neighborhood Center.

No Rabies Epidemic In Area Says White

City Sanitation official Ray White states there is no rabies epidemic in Brownfield, Terry County, noting one skunk tested near the county line does not indicate an outbreak. Permits Fall to Nine in Brownfield May

Brownfield building records show May permits at nine totaling 17,650. Year to date: 49 permits worth 548,080. January led with 265,550 while April was the year's lowest at 50,100 with no new dwelling or commercial permits. Other noted actions include church remodeling and multiple additions and moves.

Citizens' Band Radio Club Meets in Terry County

The Citizens' Band Radio Club met Monday evening with Lewis Simmonds presenting earphones to the REACT monitor. By-laws were tentatively accepted awaiting final approval at the June 15 meeting in the Civil Defense Room. The group reported interference on Channel Nine during emergencies and urged the public to refrain from using it then. Members noted rapid response times with eight minutes from call to placement and reported on duty Thursday through Sunday nights.

Absentee votes roll in for Precinct Two race

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, 60 absentee ballots had been cast for the Democratic run off for County Commissioner Precinct Two, with more voters expected. The June 6 election will use four boxes in Precinct Two. Incumbent Wayne Mullins faces John L. Johnson in the contest.

Hahn Resignation Accepted By Chamber

The Terry County Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture accepted Lloyd Hahn's resignation as vice president due to health. The board commended his service and will mail a letter of appreciation. The group announced Babe Ruth State Tournament plans with Optimist and Kiwanis clubs handling ticket sales and housing via a foster-parent plan.
