Rig leads to power line death of former resident LeeRoy Longoria
LeeRoy Longoria 19, a Brownfield native, was killed near Ave E and 19th Street in Lubbock when a core drilling rig mounted on a Trinity Engineering Truck struck power lines at about 8 p.m. Darrel Shipman 18 of Merkel was injured but in satisfactory condition. Longoria had moved from Brownfield to Merkel and attended local schools.

Murder suspect arrested over beating death with crowbar
A 29-year-old Brownfield man, Mario Jose Garcia of 313 W Powell, is jailed in Terry County on a $500000 bond after witnesses reported the early Friday beating death of his father Isreal Garcia at 221 W Lake. Police say Isreal was beaten with a crowbar and baseball bat. Mario Garcia appeared to have a mental problem per Police Chief J T Churchwell. Isreal was pronounced dead by Terry County Judge Herbert Chesshir at the scene. The case remains under investigation with no motive established.
