Three residents will win $100 gift certificates during Brownfield’s annual Sidewalk Sale on August 12. Registration begins with participating merchants. prizes awarded at 2, 4, and 6 p.m. Must be present to win.
John Briggs named principal of Brownfield Junior High School after an eight year teaching career in Arkansas. His appointment was approved at a Monday night school board meeting. Briggs and his wife, an elementary teacher, plan to move with their two children.
Monty Henson was elected president of the Terry County 4H Riding Club at a Tuesday meeting. Danny Tuggle was chosen as vice president with Ann Martin as secretary treasurer and Cindy Causseaux as reporter. The club invitational Play Day is set for July 31 at 9 a.m. and urged attendance from several counties.
Brownfield Lions Club hears Dr. Howard Mellroy condemn police review boards while urging support for police amid rising riots. Members discuss Babe Ruth League fundraiser at state tournament and camp for crippled children reports from Kerrville.
New York special reports the federal excise tax cuts will trim Terry County residents’ costs by about 151,000 dollars now, with a nationwide 1.75 billion immediate reduction and a larger 1.7 billion next year. By four years the cuts total about 4.6 billion nationally, boosting local households.
Brownfield police and Terry County sheriff notes show a quiet week with one arrest for liquor violation. Eddie Paul Ganske, 41, is jailed on a 750 bond after an abandonment charge. Pedro Alvarez, 36, released on recognizance. Omene Montano jailed on a 1000 bond for transporting alcohol in a dry area.
Terry County Sheriffs Posse rodeo returns to track with record crowds and rebuilt grandstands. Kay Phillips passed regal honors to Shere Knight as rodeo crowds cheered a parade from Lubbock to Levelland and evening events featured top riders and young riders.
Miss Jo Hubbard of Brownfield leaves at 9 a.m. with chaperone Mrs. Buddy Gillham for the Miss Texas contest in Fort Worth. Finals Saturday night will be televised. competition continues next week with 66 contestants in three divisions including talent swim wear and evening dress.
