County Budget Talks and Voting Date Set for 2006 Tax Rate
Terry County commissioners and department heads debate needs for 2006 at a July 25 session ahead of a public hearing August 22 for budget questions and any proposed tax increase. By September 12 the commission will vote on the budget and the 2006 tax rate, with last year’s rate at 70.7 cents per $100 valuation. The tax rate may be raised up to 3 percent above the effective rate without another hearing. The tax roll will be reviewed by Chief Appraiser Ronny Burran later this month to gauge the 2006 rate. The panel also discussed election judges and voting equipment funding under the Help America Vote Act, expected to cover nine boxes including early voting, plus potential federal and budget funds for devices and replacement tabulators. Items tabled included asbestos checks for the courthouse and a roof renovation plan. County official reports from June were approved, with Clerk, Sheriff, Justice of the Peace, and District Clerk postings noting revenue sources such as fines, fees, and archival and birth records.
