Below normal rainfall in January to March 1983 has strained Terry County cotton. Brownfield recorded scant moisture, especially in the southern areas, with farmers recalling a rare dry planting season as the Brownfield News surveyed moisture needs across the county.
Brownfield City Council meets Thursday in regular session at 8 30 a m with six items. A MADD chapter planning meeting led by Debbie Moen is set for 7 30 p m in Energas Flame Room. They will consider Linda Billings fence request on Broadway and hear a MADD presentation by Kacy Dobson. Bids on street paving, a public hearing on dilapidated buildings, adoption of a standard plumbing code, and Neighborhood Improvement Committee recommendations for CDBG funded home renovations are on the agenda. Local gin comments note lack of rain and crop stresses across farms.
The 15th Firecracker Road Race at Colonial Heights drew 160 entrants from West Texas and eastern New Mexico plus one from New Orleans. Runners ranged from five to 73 years old across 10 mile, 3 mile, and 1 mile divisions with local Brownfield participants posting top finishes in multiple classes. Randall Lepard of Sweetwater won the children's race with a 6 21, while Bob Jackson of Portales NM won the 10 mile open contest in 54 11.
Brownfield Police logged 31 fireworks related calls over the weekend in the city and the fire department handled grassfire incidents. Additional reports included one trespassing four assaults two thefts one burglary four disorderly conducts one harassment and one threatening call. Two bicycles worth 200 and 150 were stolen from in front of Scott's 7-11 Friday night. Terry County Sheriff's Office reported about 700 dollars in tools stolen from Brownfield Co-op Gin Tuesday morning, including a chain hoist and a cutting torch. No further damage noted.
The Legislature is recessed again after a standard session and a special session. Texas Monthly’s Ten-Best and Ten-Worst list mentions some lawmakers favorably, notably freshman Senator John Montford for his push on water issues though no comprehensive plan exists. Lt. Governor Bill Hobby again delays progress, sending his son on campaign visits in West Texas where reception was mixed, amid hostility and cool responses. See Paper N Ink on Page 14.
