Alamo City owner Happy Shahan promoted Texas prosperity in a San Antonio appearance to newspaper people last Saturday. He closed with a playful trio of pupil lines about ambition and youth, urging activity over the easy chair.
Jackie Cargill of US Life Insurance Co of Texas has been selected for the President's Council and is invited with Jo Ann to attend the Council meeting on St Maarten in May. Local weather notes show 79 degree day and 29 degree nights on the South Plains. State Senator Kent Hance of Lubbock named chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Water. He serves on Education, Finance and Natural Resources committees. Dollar Day specials teased for Sunday issue.
Friday ceremonies at 4 p.m. mark Terry County’s first bicentennial event at the Heritage Museum grounds. Leonard Ellington announces invocations and speakers with seed packet gifts to high schools, symbolic tree planting, and musical performances by local groups.
Terry County Commissioners approved a bounty on coyotes and crows. Judge Herbert Chesshir said in ten days 28 coyotes ears and scalps and 68 pairs of crow feet were turned in for a 4 dollar coyote and 50 cent crow reward.
Frances S. Compton reports 359 Terry County households use food stamps, with 751 families below the poverty line. The program supports low income diets via 21 authorized stores, using ATT cards and net income based stamp values. It notes eligibility rules and historical context, including state costs and federal impact studies.
Leroy Barrer, elected to the County ASCS Committee in 1960, retired after 14 years and was honored with a certificate of appreciation and a plaque. A farmer northwest of town, Barrer grows cotton and grain sorghum and shares details of his family, including wife Wanda and two sons Brady and Ricky. He noted changes in tenure rules since his election and hinted at future talks with current committee members.
Joel Franks, a young registered nurse at Brownfield General Hospital, works in the intensive care unit and will head the cardiac care unit in the new wing. He and wife Debbie recently relocated from Levelland. he is still in RN training at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock with 138 days, three hours and seven minutes left.
