Texas A&M economist urges quick hedges on 2000 cotton crop

TAMU economist Dr. Carl Anderson advised Plains producers to lock in prices for part of their 2000 cotton crop. He projects rising U.S. carryover stocks to about 5 million bales as planted acreage holds near 15 million, with the Step 2 program keeping cotton competitive. He warned of limited upside unless prices rise and urged plans to capture short-term rallies and price at or above costs. A new UA cooperative extension brochure on sticky cotton was released, outlining causes, detection, and management, with free copies available through extension services.
