During three weeks he studied the Army mission history tradition core values and physical fitness and received instruction in basic combat skills weapons chemical warfare bayonet drill marching rifle marksmanship armed and unarmed combat map reading field tactics courtesy military justice basic first aid foot marches and field training. Harrell is the son of Sonya Harrell and Johnny Harrell of Brownfield and a 1997 Brownfield High School graduate.
