Brownfield faces costly street damage from a severe cold snap and ice. City Manager Jake Geron says repairs will run several thousand dollars and require full-time crews, with about 71,000 budgeted for street work through March 31. Permanent fixes await warmer, drier weather and budget reevaluation.
Brownfield ISD trustees extended Superintendent Crandall Young s contract for one year through the 1985 86 school year after a two hour executive session. The vote was unanimous. The board also set an April 2 election to fill expiring terms for Mike Hamilton and Rusty Andrews and approved bids on three 1983 vehicles. A religious musical event was approved for the Middle School auditorium on March 27.
In Terry County a man pled guilty to criminal mischief in 121st District Court. Judge Ray Anderson imposed a three year probated sentence with restitution of 302.64, 97.50 court costs, 550 attorney fees, and 15 monthly probation fees. He must abstain from alcohol, continue prescribed medication, enter treatment as needed, comply with drug tests, and stay out of bars.
Brownfield City Council meets at 8 a.m. in city hall for five items. Actions include approving a delinquent taxes collection contract, considering a fire contract proposal with Terry County, approving a gas sales agreement with Energas Company and Western, and appointing Marvin Dawson as Brownfield Volunteer Fire Chief for 1983 with Jake Geron serving as consultant after retirement January 31.
The Terry County Agriculture Extension Center lists January 24 as the entry deadline for the Ag Extension photo contest. Eligible color photos from Terry County depicting local agriculture can be submitted at 201 E Hill St. Entries may be in any number and winners will be enlarged to 24 by 30 inches, framed, and displayed in Jim Hightower’s Austin office.
The Brownfield Chamber of Commerce Banquet will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Brownfield High School commons with about 600 attendees. Master of ceremonies Crandall Young will introduce Rev. Bill Penland, Dick Fletcher, John Duggan, Don Hendey, and the 1982 Outstanding Citizen. Guest speaker Justin Wilson, a Louisiana humorist and radio commentator, will headline the event. Brownfield police logged eight arrests Friday to Tuesday including six for public affray and two for public intoxication. The four day period noted several disorderly conduct reports and three gallons of paint thinner, a video game, and a .22 rifle stolen from Western Auto Store. Items valued about 315 dollars were left atop a washer and dryer when seen. Also theft of two tires and wheels from a front porch was reported.
Brownfield posted January sales tax rebates of 16273 dollars, down about seven percent from January 1982, mirroring a statewide decline reported by Texas Comptroller Bob Bullock who noted roughly 32 million in rebates to around 1000 cities, with Austin the notable exception. Other area cities showed varied changes though statewide totals fell 7.7 percent from 1982. Also, State Senator John T. Montford received key committee assignments in the Texas State Senate. The Wellman School Board will hold a special session at 8 p.m. Thursday to address the superintendent's contract, a carport bid and drape disposal.
