Annual Chamber Banquet Set for Saturday Evening

The Chamber of Commerce banquet will be held Saturday at 7 30 p m in Brownfield High School Commons. New officers and directors will be introduced as plaques are presented, with entertainment by West Texas Bluegrass Band of Lubbock and Sunny Day Singers from Lubbock Christian College. A ticket sales contest offers medallions valued at 100 50 and 20 to top sellers, and every attendee gets a bronze Terry County Medallion. The evening will crown Terry County Outstanding Citizen after weeks of nominations.

Brownfield School Board considers gym use and trustees election

The Brownfield School Board met Monday night to discuss using the High School Gym for Citizen recreation and to study allowing the gym for basketball and volleyball. They renewed Superintendent Bill Caraway’s contract to June 1980 and called an election for three board seats. Incumbents Swaringen Faulkenberry and Hunter seek re election with filing through March 2 for an April 2 vote. The board also approved a $4000 add on to Latham Stults valuation engineering firm.

Wrecks injure Brownfield driver. court actions notes and school hires

Carlos Morin of Brownfield suffered a head injury in a collision with a parked wrecker on Magnolia Street and was taken to Brownfield General Hospital. A separate Monday crash near Plaza Motel involved a 1975 Caprice and a Peterbuilt truck. The Brownfield school board approved funds for mineral district work, authorized a new two year contract, bought a Massey Ferguson tractor, new band instruments, and hired two teachers Beverly Baker and Charles D Call.

Six jailed in Terry County three day span

Six persons were booked into the Terry County Jail over the past several days. Terri Lee Bell, 17, was booked on possession of marijuana with bond set at 500 dollars. Frances Elizabeth Pirtle, 18, also faced marijuana possession charges with bond at 500 dollars. Floyd Young, 21, charged with no driver's license and an outstanding Terry County Traffic Warrant, with unspecified fines. Juan G. Tapia, 31, and Sara Alcorta, 31, were placed under protective custody. Loyed Edward Broom, 46, had a peace bond placed against him with bond set at 500 dollars.

Would-be extortion fails in Brownfield

An attempted extortion in Brownfield failed when the target did not meet the con man who claimed to be an Sears Roebuck salesman then a First National Bank employee. Police monitored the Piggly Wiggly lot for over an hour with no contact. The incident followed by local government note about Rep Jim Rudd joining committees.

Oilfield accident kills Brownfield man near Sundown

A 21 year old Brownfield man, Ray Richards, died when a heater treater exploded at a well site two miles south and two miles east of Sundown in Hockley County. Seven men were present. no others were injured. Richards, Massengill Oil Field Service employee, was pronounced dead at the scene. Services set for Jan 20 at Challis Baptist Church with burial in Terry County Memorial Cemetery. He was born Jan 27, 1955, in Brownfield.
