Representatives from City Council, County Commissioners, and Hospital Board met in Brownfield to address escalating ambulance deficits. Budget holes grew to over six thousand dollars as aging units and low collection rates strained operations.
Five minor wrecks were reported from Tuesday to Friday with no injuries. Accidents involved a 1976 Chevrolet and a 1973 Ford, a 1980 GMC and 1978 International near Village Grill, a 1979 Ford and 1977 Chevrolet near Scott's 7-11, a rolled pickup near Pecan Drive and Old Lamesa Road, and a 1976 Toyota with a 1980 Mazda at See Minor.
Brownfield Schools report a 12 percent average absence for Wednesday totaling 312. Colonial Height Elementary 85 students 15 percent absent, Oak Grove 52 students 12 percent, Intermediate 82 absent 20 percent, Middle School 78 absent 12 percent, Brownfield High 15 absent with finals possibly keeping some students home.
All three Brownfield financial institutions report strong year end results for 1980. Records as of December 31 show a combined increase in deposits exceeding 15.97 million dollars, reflecting broad growth across the local banking sector.
Col Gobel James of Reese Air Force Base described POW survival lessons from Vietnam including faith in God, communication, and humor. He recounted escape, being shot at, and hospital care after ejection on July 15, 1968, as villagers beat him and he was carried through rice paddies.
The Brownfield State Bank unit named Max Rodolph as Senior Vice President and Controller after he joins from Hobbs New Mexico. Seven bank employees received promotions including Russel Carter to Vice President and Loan Officer and Sherry Kay Davis to Vice President and Administrative Assistant. Gilbert Gutierrez advanced from Field Officer to Assistant Vice President. The paper also notes Ground Hog Benefit Dance sponsored by the American Cancer Society on January 31 at Brownfield Country Club with tickets from Brownfield State. Evelyn Carey chairs the event.
