Terry County farmer Kermitt Schults and two other local producers addressed 30 attendees at a Terry County Soil and Water Conservation District meeting. The session highlighted conservation responsibility and discussed a proposed USDA program and resource stewardship for the Great Plains.
Brownfield News reports that Cedar and Buckley Streets lost their four way stop after a city council order following a transportation study from Odessa. The survey found 344 vehicles per hour during peak hours and fewer than five preventable accidents, below state and federal thresholds.
Plans for the Third Annual Ground Hog Ball by the Terry County Unit of the American Cancer Society are set for Jan 30 from 8 p.m. to midnight with Bottom Dollar Band providing music. Honorary Ground Hog of the Year will be named. tickets start selling tomorrow at the Country Club First National Bank Brownfield State Bank ACS members and ticket chair Evelyn Carey with doors open night of event. Tax deductible 15 per couple supports cancer research and a $100 door prize donated by Joe Masso of J-M Western Wear will be awarded.
A nine inch snowstorm drops temperatures into the teens in Brownfield. Schools report high attendance at the high school while rural districts including Wellman Union and Meadow close. Roads are snowy but not closed. Water mains breakage and pipe freezes cause calls but the city offers meter shutoffs to limit customer costs. Utilities report minimal service disruption with mostly emergency work and few freeze ups in rural irrigation lines. Weather notes reference page 4.
Local citizens have two more weeks to enter the race for a county office in the May 1 Democratic Primary. The filing deadline is 6 p.m. Feb. 1. The person to contact concerning filing for an office is Democratic County Chairman Larry Sims at 755-2546.
The 121st Judicial District Court will hear 26 criminal docket cases Monday with Judge Ray Anderson presiding. Motions and pleas by named defendants advance at 10 a.m. and jurors report at 1 30 p m. Terry County Attorney Dwayne Pruitt prosecutes most cases, with some moved on change of venue to 121st District Court.
The Brownfield Police Department handled 20 minor accidents during the period Tuesday through Friday, mostly weather related. They made three arrests for assault and public intoxication and answered 110 calls. Investigating the theft of a color television set worth 300 at the Plaza Motel Friday morning. Jimmy Santiago Mesa and Vincent Bryant Sims, previously charged with aggravated robbery, are now charged with burglary in a $2,400 tools theft near a Brownfield building department northwest of Brownfield owned by George Lee.
