Holiday travelers flee Dallas airport shooting scare

Brownfield residents Dean and Nellie Murphy along with Mr and Mrs Kelly Mumbower were inside Dallas Fort Worth International Airport when a gunman demanded a plane and triggered a frightening scene. Passengers hit the floor as authorities moved people away and evacuated the terminal around 3 35 pm local time. Judge Chesshir Named Terry County Citizen of the Year

Terry County Judge Herbert Chesshir was named the 1986 Citizen of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce Banquet in Brownfield. The honor was presented by 1985 recipient Duane Moss, who recalled Chesshir’s 70 years in the county and his life milestones from Meadow through Brownfield.

Bootstrap to counsel farmers on FmHA lending rules

Operation Bootstrap, an association of attorneys and farm loan counselors, will meet Terry County producers at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the district courtroom of the Terry County Courthouse. Bruce Magness, director, cites a 25 percent drop in Texas FmHA lending from 84–85 to 85–86 and warns of continued cuts.

Terry oil value drop may trigger BRMC tax rise

Terry Memorial Hospital District faces a steep potential revenue loss from mineral valuation cuts in 1987. Hospital Administrator Pat McMillan cited a per barrel value drop from 27.50 to 17.87, risking about 281 220 in tax revenue and a 25 percent fall in district receipts. To offset this, layoffs of 4 to 7 staff are possible as costs tighten.

Terry County commissioners set routine 1987 agenda

In their first meeting of 1987 the Terry County Commissioners approved a public road waiver crossing private property near Cedar Street to the Brown field High School pens, opened bids for 1987 county depository, and approved a bond for the Tax Assessor-Collector. They bought woodchips for the Junior Livestock Show, formed a grievance committee with officials and three grand jury alumni, set 1987 salaries, and appointed county boards with no raises in the budget.

Farm Crisis Hotline hosts Friday survival seminar in Brownfield

The Texas Farm Crisis Hotline and Crossroads Samaritan Counseling Center sponsor a Farm and Ranch Survival Seminar at Brownfield High School on Friday January 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free to the public, the program features speakers on stress, the conservation reserve program, farmers rights and debt, job retraining, bank loans, and tax/accounting guidance with local officials and experts.
