The Brownfield Kiwanis Club hosts Hootenanny Hoot in the high school auditorium at 7 p.m. Saturday. The program includes both local and imported talent, with the event billed as legal, open, and above board.
Weldon Mason ascends to state president of the Young Farmers, with prior leadership as Future Farmers of America state president in 1950. The program, hosted by Kiwanis Club, features Von Worten, Bill Michael as emcee, Slumtown Symfunny, Dorothy McDonald, and a skit by club members set in Dry Gulch Saloon, plus The Premiers Exes and Western-flavored duo Glynda McWilliams Judy Norwood.
The Brownfield Chamber of Commerce lays plans for its annual banquet on February 11 with Rex Jennings as featured speaker. A speaker selection panel, four banquet committees, and members for each group were announced at Tuesday’s board meeting.
Henry M. Cargill announces candidacy for Terry County sheriff in the Democratic Primary of May 1964. A longtime resident, he has farmed Gomez area and run a farm machinery business. He and his wife live at 117 North A Street and plan active campaigning. He pledges to serve the people to the best of his ability and to meet voters before the primary.
Terry County Tax Assessor Jet Akers says poll tax purchases creep along at a snail's pace. He hopes the valuable receipts will soon move as fast as hotcakes. See FROM, Page 5.
The Brownfield City Council will meet in regular session this morning at 9 o clock. City Hall hosts the first meeting of the new year, as announced by City Secretary Jake Geron.
Police and sheriff investigators report multiple break ins over the weekend at Travis Gin and West Gin plus a home and a company, with cash, a 22 caliber pistol, and tools taken and valued at hundreds of dollars. A Brownfield Manufacturing Company entry is noted in Sheriff records.
Funeral services for O L Travis 68 were held at 2 pm Tuesday in the Memorial Chapel of Brownfield Funeral Home with Rev James Tidwell of Andrews Methodist Church officiating Burial was in Terry County Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home Travis died Sunday night in Kerrville veterans hospital where he had been a patient since August 1962 He had been a Brownfield resident since 1928 and worked as a blacksmith until his hospitalization He was a native of Henry Tennessee Survivors include his wife two daughters Mrs James Skiles Levelland and Dorothy Travis Lubbock three sons Robert and Billy of the home Jobin Randolph Air Force Base his step father Robert Cope Mayfield Ky two half sisters Mrs Georgia Staydon Mayfield Ky and Mrs George Pritchard Benton Ky a half brother Steve Cope Mayfield Ky and two grandchildren
Mrs Gene Newsom was elected vice president of the State Young Homemakers Association at the Austin convention January 3 4. The Terry County delegation included Mr and Mrs Mason, Mr and Mrs Newsom, and many local members. The event featured speakers Lt Gov Preston Smith and Dr John Strohm among others.
Brownfield Kiwanis members met at 7 30 pm in the Flame Room of the Pioneer Natural Gas building with J C Dorsett presiding. Twenty members attended as plans were finalized for the Hootenanny set for 7 pm Saturday at Brownfield High School Auditorium. Members practiced their skit for the show.
