Public School Week Planned Jr Livestock Show Opens Thursday

The Terry County Junior Livestock Show co-sponsored by Terry County Young Farmers and the Brownfield Jaycees opens Thursday and runs through Saturday with about 300 hogs 20 calves and 18 sheep entered. Swine weigh-in 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday calves at 8 p.m. Thursday. New rules set hogs 180 to 250 pounds sows under 190 to be sold privately or kept home and lambs must be sheared two weeks before the show.

Local Board Calls Eight Men In March Induction

Texas will induct 908 men from Extended and First Priority groups in March 1971 per Colonel Melvin N. Glantz state director of Selective Service for Texas. Local Board 116 schedules March 9 call for eight men born in 1951 numbers 011 through 068 with two for physicals. extended priority group to supply most while first priority used only if needed. The extended group includes men whose lottery numbers were drawn in 1970 but delayed induction. The March pre induction physical is for 2,400 men.

Elections Filing in Brownfield Area As Candidates Heat Up

In Brownfield three council seats open as Sammy Jones Truett Flache and Lloyd Hahn retire. Five candidates have filed for three spots: Jim Reed Sunny Martinez Bill Marchbanks H L Hub King and O Dell Sears. School board trustees Faulkenberry and Collier up for re election with March 3 deadline while Terry Memorial Hospital District directors race has three incumbents seeking reelection with 5 PM March 9 deadline. Wayne Rattisseau has filed. John L Cruce not seeking reelection.

Three New Firemen Introduced at Regular Meeting

At the Volunteer Firemen monthly meeting on Tuesday three new members were introduced: Clint Brannon Lee Modisette and Bob Milligan. Two training films were shown one on fire attacks and one on LP gas handling. Don Patton served as president in charge.

Satellite School Names Chairman for Mentally Retarded Children

Brownfield Satellite School for Mentally Retarded Children' s board of directors met to elect officers. Mrs. Grady Goodpasture was chosen chairwoman with Rev. Frank Brooks as treasurer and Mrs. Ken Muldrow as secretary. Susan Williams announced resignation effective April 1 and teaching posts are open. The group plans to move back to the United Presbyterian Church for spring, pending building repairs.

Three Texas Public Schools Week Open Houses Planned

Texas Public Schools Week runs March 1 to 5 to mark 117 years of Texas public education. Open houses are scheduled at Oak Grove Jesse G Randal and Colonial Heights elementary schools with specific Tuesday and Thursday evening times. Middle School hosts no new event this week.

Outreach Tour Meet Planned

A meeting for band parents tour applicants adults and students planning or seeking information about the European tour will be held at 7 30 p m Tuesday in the high school band hall Bob Fraley and John McCoy will provide updates on the Outreach Tour The deadline for tour applications will be discussed and deposits may be made for those still considering going or having a student attend.

National Weather Service Launches Skywarn for 71

The National Weather Service launches Skywarn 71 as the annual campaign to enlist volunteer spotters and inform communities on tornado preparedness. Peak tornado season spans April to June with events across the Appalachians to the Rockies and outbreaks possible any month.
