March 3 Filing Deadline Set for Brownfield Districts

Local notice reminds prospective school board candidates that March 3 is the filing deadline in Brownfield and surrounding districts. Incumbent Carrol Collier and Curtis C. Scott with Leon Lepard seek Place 5 and Place 4 respectively as ballots prepare for April 3.

Two Die In Jet Trainer Crash At Terry County Base

Two Reese Air Force Base pilots Capt. William R. Price and 1st Lt. Ralph R. Fabian died when their T-37 jet trainer crashed shortly after noon at the Terry County Auxiliary Base west of Levelland. Both men were married fathers of two. The crash occurred as they were closing down the landing strip after student practice and preparing to return to Reese for lunch. Investigators expect to take time before releasing findings.

Chamber Board To Meet In Regular Session Wednesday

The Brownfield Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors will hold its regular monthly meeting Wednesday at 6:30 AM at the local Chamber office.

Bill Would Ban Spanish Fly Stimulant in Texas

Texas lawmakers push to criminalize the stimulant known as Spanish fly with 2 to 10 year terms for sale or possession. Rep Bill Clayton and Rep Jesse George cite a fatal 1963 Cochran County crash and a beetle derived powder as deadly and unregulated.

Mischief At A Minimum In Terry County Patrol Notes

Local law enforcement reports show few incidents with one theft and minor shoplifting. T C Hogue reports a stolen 12 volt battery from Route 4. Nadine Wilkerson, 50, convicted of forgery and sentenced to two years. Roy Deil Nickens, 24, jailed on DWI with no plea entered. Two others arrested on abandonment and vagrancy charges, free after posting bond. Highway Patrol also reports a vagrancy arrest. See Mischief Page 8.

Uniformity and Equity in Farm Tax Review by Brownfield Board

Brownfield School Board met in a called session to review the tax system and seek equalization across tax-paying groups. The discussion focused on farm land values using an income approach, classifying irrigated, dry cultivated, grassland, and waste land, with figures to be prepared by John Jennings for next meeting.

Two More Candidates Enter Meadow Trustee Race

Meadow Independent School District announces Lester Lockett and Leonard M Williams filed as candidates for the Board of Trustees to challenge holders Raymond Vardeman and Olane Caswell. Filing deadline is March 3 in Superintendent Wilkes office. Absentee voting runs March 15 to 30 at the same location. Continuing directors include Winfred Tucker Don Day BW Branch Edward Jordan and Edgar Melcher.

Kay Urges Individual Responsibility Against Communism

C L Kay of Lubbock spoke to Brownfield Optimist Club about personal duty and an informed public. He warned freedom is on trial and urged active citizen involvement to halt communism, citing world confusion in politics education economics and religion.

Voices Listed At Club Gathering

Brownfield High School choir directed by Jim Casey performed for the Rotary Club as the featured program of that day’s luncheon. Brownfield Junior High participants joined the program at the Party House with President Bill Noble in charge. Guests included J. D. McPhaul of Lubbock, Gordon Hopkins, Ira Wolfe, and Ronnie Bartley.

Livestock Show Scheduled Soon

The Terry County Junior Livestock Show will be held March 6 7 and 8 at the County Show Barn west of Brownfield. Co sponsoring groups are the Terry County Chapter of Young Farmers and the Brownfield Junior Chamber of Commerce with about 35 calves and 35 hogs entered by Terry County 4 H members and an estimated 60 calves and 190 hogs county wide. Weighing in begins 11 a m March 6 for calves and 7 a m for swine with judging that day and displays Sunday March 7. Auctioneers Ken and Corky Bozeman will sell the animals Monday. Officials include O D Hearn Jerry Keesee co superintendents with swine judges Cy Duffy Dr Tim Faulkenberry Jake Fulford and others assisting as weighers sifter and judges. The fat steer division falls under Eddie Bingham Wayne Ratisseau with supervision by Charles Robinson Leroy Barrier.
