Brownfield Public Schools will hold Open House next week in recognition of Texas Public Schools Weeks March 3-7. The writer reflects on family roles and the school year, noting how Open House provides a chance to see student work and appreciate teachers.
On Saturday's Washington Sale promotion a 14 year old girl won $50 and about 40 area residents received cherry pies. Dianna Flowers of Welch won Brownfield Bonus Bucks after a single registration at Star's. Stores like J.B. Marsh Machine Sales and Service and Sears named local pie winners. Seeinners Page.
Donna Steinfath daughter of Mr and Mrs August Steinfath of Union won the Oratorical Contest sponsored by Howard Henson Post 269 American Legion. She a Union High School senior presented The Spirit Of The Constitution. Loretta Bielss represented Brownfield High School with The People's Constitution Ours To Defend. Steinfath to contest at District 19 noon March 8 at Coronado High School Lub bock with public invited. Judges were H B Virgil Crawford Douglass Rohre and Bill Cone. J B Huckabee timekeeper and Harold Andrews master of ceremonies. Auxiliary served dinner to members and guests.
Duane Moss, manager of the Terry County Soil Conservation Service, spoke to the Brownfield Kiwanis Club on soil and water conservation stressing community impact beyond landowners. Attendees included Wayland Reeves Terri Moore and info on the March 7 Athletic Banquet with John Niland as guest speaker for the Dallas Cowboys.
County tax assessor Akers reports registration of automobiles is slower than 1968. Through Friday fewer than 900 plates sold while about 10 000 were issued in 1968. State figures project over 7.2 million registrations in Texas this year, with reflectorized white on black plates and the 1969 system to speed 1970 processing.
The Executive Committee of the Texas Federation of Republican Women approves the Terry County Republican Women's Club membership. Peggy Gillespie is president, with Doris Densmore, Janelle Evans, Pricella Purettel, and Juanita Smith holding officers posts. The club sits in Senatorial District 38 and aims to boost women’s involvement in government.
Open House at local schools runs March 3 to 7 in recognition of Texas Public Schools Week. The event marks Texas Education’s 115th birthday in public education.
Four directors of the Terry Memorial Hospital District will be elected April 5 with a March 10 at 5 p.m. filing deadline. Petitions signed by 10 qualified voters must be presented to place a name on the ballot, petitions available in Pat McMillan's office at Brownfield General Hospital. By noon Tuesday six men had filed: Robert Baumgardner Homer Barron Bonald Stice seeking reelection William Cowan John L Cruce and Robert Beasley. Mrs. Joe Henson is not seeking re election.
Carl Newton Bowman a 52 year old Levelland man was killed in a one car accident near By Lo s Wrecking Yard on the Levelland Highway. His Pontiac station wagon ran off the road and struck a telephone pole.
Twenty five cases set for county court on the criminal docket for Monday at 10 a m include offenses such as worthless checks aggravated assault illegal possession assault with a motor vehicle prohibited weapon abandonment and driving while licenses are suspended Those called to jury duty names listed include Gerald Jordan Wayne Rattisseau and many others Highway Patrolmen Thelbert Millsap and James Johns reported an accident with Bowman dead at the scene Services for Bowman tentatively planned for 2 p m at Cactus Drive Church of Christ Levelland Burial in Levelland cemetery Bowman employed as a pumper for Pan American Petroleum Company Other arrests include Stanley Wayne Ritter charged with racing James Carrol Lawrence charged with racing and Gloria Brown released on bond after assault with intent to murder Jeanetta Miller arrested for worthless check and released after paying fines and costs
Zelma Miller was elected vice president of the South Plains Association of City Clerks and Secretaries at its Feb 21 meeting in Lubbock Municipal Building. Other officers for the year include Madge King, Dollie Berry, M L Rea, Gerald Kendrick, FE Oden, Dorothy Cox, and Jimmie Lou Stewart as immediate past president. The day featured a law workshop on how to find the law, elections law, tort liability, and panel discussions.
County Commissioners accepted Jim Pete Hale's resignation effective Feb 28. Hale moves to Brownefield State Bank and Trust, starts March 1. John Dick Moorehead named election judge for Box 13. FE V Riley remains alternate. Court also approves tire purchase for $95, radio install for $50.84, 36 inch deep electric line work near Ropesville, and $175 to Pride Cemetery Association.
