Brownfield council backs land sale for market rent apartments

The Brownfield City Council approved a 15000 bid by Pat Greever of Covenant Properties for a land block south of Tahoka Road on Cedar Street to develop non subsidized market rate apartments. Construction start and reversion clauses limit payment and ownership, with city retaining ownership if work does not begin on schedule. BIDCorp appointments replace two current members.

County weighs jail project as overcrowding grows

Terry County Commissioners tabled the jail proposal until March 13 after hours of debate over funding and staffing. Sheriff Johnson reported the jail was at capacity with 15 inmates, while 15 more were at Hockley County and five more en route, with about $19,000 already paid to Hockley that month. Officials cited plunging property values, rising ad valorem rates, and a potential 30 cent road tax to ease finances, but had not decided on putting the ballot measure to voters.

County faces jail expansion cost and tax options

The March 13 meeting will decide on a 48 bed jail project priced 2 to 2.5 million with annual operating costs around 348 200 including 220 000 debt service. A 0 5 percent sales tax could delay hitting the 80 cent ad valorum cap, funding about 220 000 yearly. Court page 4.

Rep Walker resigns as Yoakum water manager

District 80 Representative Gary Walker resigned as manager of the Sandy Land Underground Water Conservation District effective January 10 1995. He also refunded all salary and benefits since that date. The board accepted the resignation and appointed David Turbough of Denver City as acting manager with no compensation.
