The local School Board of Trustees devoted most of its Monday meeting to delinquent personal property tax collections. A list of delinquent accounts was examined and discussed in detail with School Tax Assessor and Collector L Pound, with legal advice on technicalities and possible solutions provided by an attorney.
The district prepares for a May 2 primary style election with one announced candidate per place and two incumbents. Billie Moore seeks Place 1, James Thurman Place 2, and non incumbent Bill R. Davis seeks Place 3 with March 4 filing deadline looming. The board outlines new place specific filing and voting procedures and notes various reports and personnel changes while public schools week looms.
A Monday night operation by Brownfield police, Terry County sheriff’s deputies, and the Texas Liquor Control Board netted four arrests for vagrancy at 419 N. 6th 414 W. Story and 301 N. 6th, with Lina Sanchez Alicia Suarez Dick Espinosa Olivares and Guadalupe Cavazos named. Additional arrests include R B Jordan for aggravated assault fine paid. County deputies detained two men on warrants for Lubbock authorities and other suspects face charges for theft check and vagrancy. Local thefts and minor traffic incidents also reported plus hospital wallet theft and car accidents on Island Main and A and East Buckley streets.
The Texas Highway Department released the 1964 Official Highway Travel Map featuring improved legibility and new routes. It includes the US 82 extension from Lubbock to Las Cruces, Ranch Road No. 1 in Gillespie County, and over 3,100 miles of four lane highways. Free copies are available via state offices and tourist bureaus.
Brownfield High School held its Athletic Banquet in the junior high cafeteria with the Athletic Queen Miss Daphene Pederson crowned by tri captains Gary Nunn R Bishop and Wayne Hall. Frank Junell of Lubbock spoke on ethics and life rules. Mistress Peggy Dial led ceremonies.
The Brownfield City Council will hold a Thursday morning session at 9 o clock in City Hall with Mayor Jess McWherter presiding.
Terry County commissioners plan four roadside rest areas at square corners with shaded understructures and seating, bidding details to follow. Meadow residents seek a $2,4000 fire truck and depot to curb fire protection gaps as Ropesville and Brownfield units currently respond. The court also orders airport repairs and seal coating across three precincts, with plans to open bids soon.
The Brownfield News plans a HiFi Preprint for Knight’s Furniture offering color carpets and a color page inline with early wallpaper roll advertising concepts from New York 1958. The project aims to attract bids and expand national ad potential. Separate items note water pollution measures, well water sampling urged, and a road petition discussion with local officials and investors.
Herbert F. Emery district manager for General Telephone Company says plans are well underway to install new automatic electric dial equipment for Meadow customers. A new addition has been added to the current telephone company building in Meadow to house the equipment.
Applications are accepted for premeasurement of cotton acreage by the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation office manager Love Miller. March 13 is final filing. Skip row planting rules for 1964 mirror 1963, counting only acreage devoted to crops.
Farmers must submit water well samples by Friday for analysis. Ed Reed will collect samples Friday afternoon and take them to Midland for testing. Results will be presented March 4 before the Texas Water Pollution Control Board as part of no pit disposal orders. Attorneys George McCleskey and Terry & Daw spokesmen represent local interests. Use clean new pint jars and run wells 10 to 15 minutes before sampling.
