World Day of Prayer Services Planned in Brownfield
World Day of Prayer events will be held today from 10 to 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Brownfield. Mayor Homer Nelson will read a proclamation, followed by hymns, devotional, offering, prayer, and a closing prayer in a 45 minute, non denominal service inviting all faiths to participate. The Chamber of Commerce urges local stores and offices to close to allow staff and customers to attend. A worldwide chain of prayer is planned for today.

WTCC seeks official recognition of region drouth lost cotton acreage
West Texas Chamber of Commerce urged official acknowledgment of drouth caused cotton losses. In a letter to the State Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation committee WTCC cites 80 West Texas counties losing 2,016,717 acres in 1953 versus 1951 and 1,805,627 versus 1952. The group warns failure to classify drouth losses as cotton acres could hurt 1955 allotments.

Brownfield schools in Terry county invest heavily to maintain education quality. The last year spent 292 240.87 on instruction for nearly 2,000 students, 38 430.55 on tax administration, 30 906.04 on transportation, 35 201.53 for maintenance, and 30 196.62 for capital outlay. Bond debt totals 1 060 000 with retirement expected in 1980. Tax receipts reached 251 439.69 with 94 percent collection. Athletic funds show receipts 12 341.45 and disbursements 11 498.32.
