Adult Literacy Classes Start at Colonial Heights

Volunteers teach English and literacy classes at Colonial Heights on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30. The program uses materials from Kendrick Library and is led by volunteers including T. T. Benton Sid Mellveen Don Park and Greg Hayes in reading and conversational instruction for men and beginners.

Reading tutors guide adult and child language learners

Doris Fletcher, Margene Bryant, Terry Lou Moorehead, Freddie Tatum and Marilyn Adams teach reading to ladies. Katrinka Park and Sandy Dennis work with the ladies learning English. Carol McIlveen, Mary Jane O'Daniel and Carolyn Sexton help the children of attending adults develop age appropriate language skills. Most of the 41 students are German.

Terry Grand Jury Indicts 12 subjects on 15 counts

Terry County Grand Jury convened Wednesday morning and handed down 15 indictments against 12 individuals. Two capital murder counts involve the death of Mexican national Andres Ismael Moreno Rubio on December 6, 1995. Alejandro Cordero faces a capital murder charge and is held without bond. he led authorities to a Gaines County grave where Rubio’s body was found. Cordero was arrested in Phoenix and returned to Terry County. Rubio’s cash and uncashed paychecks are cited in the case. Other indictments include multiple burglary of habitation charges, a burglary related to a habitation, and assorted felonies including DWI, marijuana offenses, and tampering with a governmental record. Bond amounts are listed with each name.

Terry County Commissioners Post Short Monday Agenda

Terry County Commissioners schedule a brief 10 a.m. meeting with three items. First National Bank elects three new directors at stock holders meeting

The First National Bank of Brownfield held its annual stockholders meeting this month. L. J. Richardson announced assets totaling 117,853,997 as of December 31, 1995, up from 112,041,592 in 1994. Three new directors were elected: James F. Turner, J. W. Riley, and Rodney Warren.
