County and City Commissioners agreed to continue study on financing a 44 acre park addition with a swimming pool. Officials report further review of city financing for maintenance is underway after a harmonious session last week.
Local council debates selling 44 acres to the county to fund park and pool maintenance. A steel pool option could reduce costs to about 150000. The airport site plan involves CAA survey input and a long-term hangar site for Roy Harris.
At the courthouse Tuesday night approximately 40 people from Home Demonstration clubs study groups civic organizations and other groups voted unanimously to adopt the YMCA style summer youth recreation program. A delegate from each group will form the Community Council with officers and committees to be elected. Financing of the program has been investigated.
The Lions club Tournament of Talent reaches the finals with junior and elementary groups competing against high school acts. Dee Parker Dance School and Al Royce Butch Fields win strong notices as ticket sales edge up with $170 in prizes from local merchants. Sonny Curtis headlines as 7:30 pm show at Brownfield High awaits.
Shirley Brown Martha Chish olm Janelle Bragg and Barbara Whitaker were chosen to represent Brownfield at the area Future Teachers of America meeting on March 4 5 in Big Spring. Miss Whitaker will serve as a delegate. Plans include a mother daughter banquet and attending the state FTA meeting in Corpus Christi in April. Jerre Sue Estes led the sing song and chapter mothers were J L Newsom L R Grissom N C Brown and Fred Turner. Refreshments were served by Linda Rut ledge Lavone Seaton Norma Meeks and Virginia La Rue.
The Brownfield Public School Week runs March 7 12 with an operetta Cinderella's Supper presented by about 400 students Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. Open houses run first two nights. 60 student babysitters aid parents. radio programs and club programs accompany events.
Terry County oil activity advances with several wildcat wells expected to reach the Pennsylvanian. No. 1 W. J. Beckham et al targets 11,000 feet from Section 3, while Honolulu No. 1-B Ellington nears 13,400 feet. Drilling begins at once with multiple tests reported north of Gomez and Wellman area.
Filing deadline for City Aldermen is March 5 with Alderman Herman Chesshir not seeking re election. Virgil Travis and Sam Murphy have not stated their positions. City election set for April 6. Brownfield School Board Trustee election on April 2 with terms expiring for I M Bailey W J Carter Cecil O Neal. Ballot candidates must file by March 24. Election board appointees J D Miller James H Dallas W G McDonald R V Moreman.
Five accidents reported this week with a warning from City Police that a stop sign means STOP. A 19 percent Buick driven by 14 year old Connie Carrouth struck a parked car and the Modern Steam Laundry front, causing $200 building damage, $118 to the parked car, $650 to the Buick, and $75 to a rear fender on another car. The driver was treated at a hospital and released with no charges filed.
A state health department sponsored course named Food Handlers Sehnat will run Monday through Friday at the South Plains Health Unit. City sanitarian Homer Barnes urges care workers and grocery clerks to attend. Certificates issued on completion and 90 percent participation earns placards. Two daily classes offered at 11 am and 3:30 pm taught by Bob Munroe from Austin.
Mrs. Annie Hunt, a Brownfield pioneer since 1902, recalls the first train in Brownfield and her early role as Terry County’s first telephone operator. She witnessed the switch from the 1917 iron horse to last week’s 2000 hp streamliner, and notes life changes since her husband Georg Hunt’s 30 years as a conductor.
